Hello! Chag Sameach!
We are living in the period of
Chanukah - The feast of lights.
Also known or called as the feast of dedication.
The feast of Chanukah celebrates an important event in Jewish history,
the recovery and restoration of the Temple, in a period in which this same Temple
during the intermediate days between Malachi and John the Baptist,
More or less in the year 165 BCE, incidents led to the desecration of the jewish sanctuary,
by the hand of Antiochus IV Epiphanes, a seleucian ruler, in a post-Hellenistic time of the conquests of Alexander the Great.
This phase of Jewish history is very interesting. After the return of the Jews during the 70 years of Babylonian captivity, by Ezra and Nehemiah, the whole Jewish religion has undergone profound transformations,
Ezra who was high priest, scribe and expert in Torah, and Nehemiah, a ruler and righteous-religious man, they engaged in a mission,
to fully restore the way that Jews lived in their time. The creation of the yeshivot by Ezra,
schools of teshuva and learning about the Jewish faith, has caused in that society
that had developed in past 70 years, the need to rescue
the root of its spirituality
based on Torah.
During this time, until the death of Ezra, there was a golden period of our spiritual life, but as always happens,
after a long period of restoration, always occurs a period of stagnation, and this stagnation,
made later in the days of the Greek Empire,
with the death of Alexander and the spread of Hellenistic culture in Palestine,
Jews were involved with the Hellenic faith through idolatry and the hellenistic culture
connected to sports, marathons,
in racetracks (hippodrome), in public bathrooms,
in illicit *** behaviors that the Torah forbids,
So, this led the jews to a period of decadence
of our spirituality.
This decay as always happens, is due to cultural assimilation, and this cultural assimilation that repeats today
because the Jews are mixed with other peoples, they end up absorbing their cultures, likewise happened at that time.
The situation became so serious that the priesthood itself was corrupted. But the bases of this story had been prophesied
in the Book of Daniel, and is about that we'll talk today.
Daniel chapter 8 prophesied almost 200 years before these events
a period of moral decadence of the Jewish community .
In chapter 8, he talked about the rise of the Greek Empire, its decay and the rise of one of its generals,
the dynasty that this general would bring, and the consequence that a descendant of it would bring to our people.
Let's read Daniel chapter 8:
"In the third year of the reign of King Belshazzar a vision appeared to me, Daniel, after that which appeared to me at the first.I looked in the vision, and while I was looking I was in the citadel of Susa, which is in the province of Elam; and I looked in the vision and I myself was beside the Ulai Canal.
I looked up, and there before me was a ram with two horns, standing beside the canal, and the horns were long. One of the horns was longer than the other but grew up later".
This two-horned ram refer to the Medo-persian kings Cyrus and Darius. They were great kings of Persia and Darius who came after Cyrus, became even greater than this.
That's why here said that last would be greater than the first. "I saw the ram butting westward, northward, and southward, and no other beasts could stand before him nor was there anyone to rescue from his power, but he did as he pleased and magnified himself....
So, here is talking about the expansion of the Medo-Persian Empire. An interesting feature about the Medo-Persian Empire is that the persians were not idolaters
as many think, they were devotees of a monotheistic religion, and they believed in one god,
Although there was no direct relationship between this god and the G-d of the Jews, but they believed in one god, that's why Cyrus
was the only king in Jewish history who was not Jewish who was called messiah. He was even responsible for the return of the Jews from Babylon in Ezra's time.
"While I was observing a male goat (he was talking about other empire),was coming from the west over the surface of the whole earth without touching the ground; (it has to do with the speed that this...
empire now was developing), "and the goat had a conspicuous horn between his eyes; (this horn was related to Alexander the Great, king of Macedonia and then emperor of the great Greek Empire).
"He came to the ram with the two horns, which I had seen standing on the bank of the canal, and he ran at him in his powerful wrath. I saw him come beside the ram, and he was enraged at him; and he struck the ram and shattered his two horns, and the ram had no strength to withstand him".
Here was talking about the greatest battle that happened between Alexander and King Darius, wherein the King Darius of Persia was deposed and he ended up running away
and being killed by his own soldiers, while Alexander carried on with his army to the city of Babylon, that it was the Persian Empire,
and conquered Babylon, so now the whole Persian empire was under the Greek-Macedonian rule.
Verse 8:"Then the male goat magnified himself exceedingly. But as soon as he was mighty, the large horn was broken; and in its place there came up four conspicuous horns toward the four winds of heaven.
This had to do with the four generals of Alexander, because after his death, they eventually ruled his empire.
Alexander died young, at 33 years of age, not in battle as history would tell,
but he caught a fever in his attempt to conquer India. This fever led him to death, and in his place, because he didn't had a macedoniam son,
the only wife he had with whom he had a son, was persian; some historians say that this child was unable
to rule the Empire because he had physical problems, he was crippled; and others say that in fact
he was not allowed to ascend the throne, because he wasn't macedonian,
he wasn't greek. So, his generals, after the death of Alexander,
they divided the empire among themselves and have continued his government.
Indeed, initially it wasn't four but five generals: Cassander, Seleucus, Lysimachus, Antigonus and Ptolemy.
Later, with the death of Antigonus, Ptolemy took possession of his part, remaining four as the prophecy said; Then was like this:Lysimachus, Cassander, Seleucus and Ptolemy.
So, these four generals who ruled in place of Alexander formed the new scenario for the realization and fulfillment of the prophecy of Daniel 8.
these four generals, one became the most important of them here in our history, that culminating in the Chanukah event.
In the verse 9 says that: "Out of one of them came forth a rather small horn (Seleucus) which grew exceedingly great toward the south, toward the east, and toward the Beautiful Land.
What it means here is that this horn represents the general Seleucus, we will see later why, is who will conquer the land of Israel, the Beautiful Land.
Then we know that was Seleucus, because were precisely the seleucians
the seleucians' kings, the descendents of the general Seleucus, one of the heirs of the throne of Alexander,
who precisely ruled and conquered, what was known as Palestine ie the Land of Israel.
verse 10: "It grew up to the host of heaven and caused some of the host and some of the stars to fall to the earth, and it trampled them down."
In other words, this host of heaven, was the priestly class.
The priestly class itself, also in a period of great spiritual frustration,
left themselves be corrupted,
and the corruption of the priestly class,
has made the role of high priest be sold (corrupted),
