Dilma Rousseff is officially out.
Early this morning, Brazil’s senators voted to impeach the embattled president.
The move follows Brazil’s lower house which voted in April to impeach the president.
Violent protests hit the streets of Sao Paulo as Pro Rousseff supporters clashed with police.
So now what?
Rousseff will be told in person that she has to leave office for 180 days while an investigation
takes place.
Vice President Michel Temer is now the interim president while Rousseff will be known as
the ‘impeached president’.
After the six months are up, the Senate will reconvene and Rousseff will have 20 days to
argue her innocence.
If she fails that, the Senate will vote to remove her from office.
Rousseff is being investigated over allegations that she misrepresented the country’s finances
to hide the poor state of the economy during her re-election in 2014.
The impeachment process has already caused chaos on Brazil’s streets with supporters
and detractors clashing.
Brazil is suffering through its worst recession since the 1930s and Rio is due to host the
summer Olympics this August.
Not to mention the Zika outbreak is affecting both local and foreign tourists alike.
