Katla has erupted twenty-some-odd times
in the last thousand years and Eyjafjallajokull
has erupted three.
Each time Eyjafjallajokull has erupted,
Katla has as well.
So there is a statistical coincidence between those two
Vulcanologists measure the intensity of volcanic eruptions
by a thing called the Volcanic Explosivity Index.
On that scale, the current eruption
with Eyjafjallajokull is probably about a two,
Mount Saint Helens in 1980 for comparison was probably a four
and Pinatubo was probably a six.
So each number that you go up is ten times more explosive
than the one before.
If Katla erupted it would likely be in that six range.
