Hi and welcome to baby Signing Question And Answer Monday!
Today's question comes from a mom who's wondering
if it is important to have everyone in her baby's life
sign with her baby in order to be successful.
Ideally it would be great if everyone signed with your baby
but that's not necessarily realistic,
as long as you are consistent when signing with your baby
your baby will pick it up.
And what you'll also find is that
the caregivers in your child's life
will tend to sign with your baby once your baby starts signing back.
When I first started signing with my daughter
my husband was very on board with it
but he just didn't remember to do it all the time.
so it was kind of frustrating for me
because I wanted him to do it, but
it just didn't come naturally to him.
It wasn't until my daughter started signing back
that she was encouraging him to sign with her
and then he got on board and was very excited
because he saw the results.
What you can do to encourage the care givers in your child's life to sign
is maybe put up little notes around the house
or little signs.
For example, I have these little flash cards
MORE and FINISHED
and what I might do is put these on the fridge
to remind my husband to sign these words with my daughter.
And it just is a reminder of how to do it
and to do it.
you might want to put up a sign saying
I love you
near your child's bed
or CHANGE DIAPER near the changing station.
BATH! near the bath tub
so it is a visual reminder for the caregivers in your child's life
to sign with your child and it shows them how to do it
so that they don't necessarily have to remember the signs
they are right there in their face.
You can print off signs from the internet
you can take pictures of yourself doing the signs
and put them up around the house.
If you send your child to daycare
what you might want to do is print off a list
of signs that you use on a regular basis with your baby
and just ask the daycare provider to use a couple of them throughout the day.
When you pick your baby up at the end of the day
you may want to ask the daycare worker
how did it go? Did you find it easy to sign
or did you forget?
And just sort of talk to them about the process of signing
and explain that when you first started signing
maybe you didn't remember to do it throughout the day as well.
But once your child starts signing,
I can guarantee you that the care givers in his or her life
will want to sign back.
So I don't want you to get discouraged if you are the only person signing with your baby.
You will still be able to be successful.
And when your baby does start signing back
I bet you your caregivers will jump on board.
