The Tammela Market is the heart of the Tammela neighbourhood -
and one of the busiest in Tampere.
Tammela is a pilot district for the EU-Gugle project.
Tiina Sahakari represents the city. Why Tammela?
The area is included in our strategic development programme.
The goal of the Tammela project is -
to promote new building projects and to generally improve the area.
The EU-Gugle project promotes energy efficient renovation strategies.
What sets Tammela apart from the rest?
The location is ideal.
The university, railway station and city centre are all in close proximity.
There are also certain challenges.
The buildings are from between the '60s and the '80s.
The population is primarily elderly.
What does this cause?
The old buildings are in need of renovations.
Many buildings require facade and plumbing overhauls.
While renovating, we should improve energy efficiency.
And the population?
Tammela should be made attractive for families with children -
in order to maintain its services.
Housing associations have many options for improving energy efficiency.
These include better insulation, eco-friendly lighting, and solar panels.
It is often best to combine the work -
with another large project such a plumbing overhaul.
The energy efficiency goals are ambitious:
an improvement of as much as 50 per cent.
The figure includes renovations made in the last five years.
The windows in this building have been upgraded.
Further improvements are on the horizon.
Housing association chairman Pertti Vesterinen, -
the windows in your building were recently replaced.
What effect has this had?
It's been wonderful.
We've saved energy thanks to the new windows, -
whose energy efficiency class is "A".
The apartments now get more light.
Airing panels were replaced with ventilation windows.
We further improved air quality by installing fresh air ventilators.
You've taken even more steps towards energy efficiency.
This includes replacing heat exchangers and doors.
Now you're planning to install a heat recovery system.
What are your expectations?
Because energy prices keep climbing, -
naturally it is our goal to save energy by as much as 50 per cent.
When will the changes be realized?
Either next year or the following year.
The EU-Gugle project aims to discover -
which steps housing associations are willing to take to meet ambitious goals.
However, the main concern is making the flats more comfortable and valuable, -
and also setting an example -
which encourages housing associations everywhere to focus on energy efficiency.
