In this example I am going to show you the process of going from a topic searching in the library catalog to actually pulling a book from the
shelf. So I want to go to the 'Books & More' tab; and for this example I've got a teenage daughter,
a young teenage daughter, and she is starting to ask questions of a sex (or more questions about sex).
So I actually want to do a little bit of research.
So I'm going to look up 'sex education
and teenagers.'
And 'Search.'
All right. I'm going to limit this list to just books that are at the library,
because I want to be able to check the book out and take it home
so that my daughter to see it as well.
I'm also been a limit to just books,
because I'm not really interested in DVD recordings or streaming media right now.
So the first in our list of 16 books is A Complete Sex Education for Parents, Teenagers, and Young Adults.
It sounds like an absolutely great title; but looking at the publication date, 1973 is 40 years ago,
and I'm really not interested in looking at something that was written before I was born. Looking at the next book, Not My Kid: What
Parents Believe About the Sex Lives of Their Teenagers, sounds like a good title. It is from 2012 - so let's check it out.
I want to look at the table contents to see it that's going to give me a better indication.
And, sure enough, there is a chapter on
when parents and teens talk about sex. That looks like it's going to give me some information.
So I want to check this book out. The first thing I need to do is make sure it's available. It is, so I need to take note of the location Michnr Stacks and the call
number; I'll write the call number of downs so I can go find it. But first I need to figure out where the location of Michnr Stacks is.
So for that I'm going to go back to that library guide that gives the tour
of the library.
So I'll check out 1st Floor.
and we'll see if there's anything labled as Michnr Stacks.
So we've got maps, reference stacks, indexes, reference desk, reference stacks, current reading.Nothing there, so I'll go to the 2nd Floor.
Here we've got current periodicals, videos, DVDs, bound periodicals, newspapers, micro, youth collection, K-12, bound periodicals again, and then finally
on the south wall we have Michener stacks A-F.
But my call number starts with an HV, so I want to go up and head up to the 3rd Floor.
and see if that's where the stacks that have HVs in them are.
So along the north wall we can see that it goes G - HQ,
going towards the east and then on the east wall we've got HQ to LB; so that's where my Michener
Stacks HVs are going to be. So I know when I get to the library I need to go up to the 3rd Floor.
Okay, so now we need to write down our call number location which is Michener Stacks,
and our call number is HQ
35
E45
2012.
And then we need to know where in the library to go, which we looked up, so we're going to go to 3rd Floor, and we're going to go
to the northeast corner where the Hs are located.
Now that we have that information we just need to go get it.
So I take the stairs up to 3rd Floor and then head towards the northeast corner.
As I pass the books shelves, they'll give me the letters on the end of the bookshelves.
Also on the end of each bookshelf are little placards that give me precisely what book it starts with and what book it ends with so I know where HQ 35 is going to be.
So between HN 801 and HQ 76 will be HQ 35. So I know to walk down this specific
bookshelf.
All right. I stop and I look. So now I am in the HQ 26s; I need to go further.
Now I'm into the HQ 35s, but it is the Ss, and I need the Es, so I'm going to go up another shelf,
All right. And here is HQ 35 B, so I keep looking for HQ 35 E. and I found a HQ 35 E45 2012 - it is the
book that I need, so I'm going to go ahead and pull that book out.
And there is Not My Kid - the book that I'm looking for.
And if I'm unsure I can go ahead and check the call number again, but this is the book I'm looking for.
