the telegraph, the penny post, printing technology, and other advances in Victorian communication
benefited society by helping spread ideas, stimulate business, and by allowing all classes
to stay connected with family and friends all over London. the High speed printing press
was developed by Friedrich Gottlob Koenig and Andreas Friedrich Bauer in 1846. it allowed
for books to be sold cheaply which made them available to all classes. In victorian society,
It spurred Self teaching, Studying, Creativity, and it created mass audiences of readers made
up of people who have read the same text and can share ideas and stories even though they
are miles or years apart. The Penny post was organized my William Dochwra. It allowed people
to deliver mailto anywhere in london for just a penny. In 1683, the government took over
the Penny Post to fund wars against France. The Penny post made communication affordable
for all classes. It led to an increase in the number of post offices, daily mail deliveries,
and letters of business, education, and personal correspondence. It also created the Postal
products industry which included things like paperclips, stamps, and writing desks. Sadly,
the penny post also stimulated junk mail, blackmail, and fraud, which we still struggle
with today. before the invention of the telegraph, Speedy long distance communication was done
using flag signals. But in 1790, Claude Chappe invented the Optical Semaphore Telegraph,
which had arms that acted like flags to send signals, effectively replacing the flag signals. But
because this was an Optical telegraph, It wouldn't work when it was dark. Many people
tried to develop a solution to this problem with inventions of many electric telegraphs.
Francis Ronalds invented the first working telegraph in 1816 which used a clock face
to convey messages William Fothergill Cooke and Charles Wheatstone invented the five needle
telegraph where the needles would point to the letters on the display. But eventually,
Samuel Morse invented the most inexpensive, and most widely used telegraph key and code. His
simple code of dots and dashes made communication more and more widespread all over the world.
The telegraph helped the National convention spread word of battles and eventually was
used in every day news to inform people of events happening far away.
