Stannah goes back to 1867, when my great-great-grandfather started a small lift component business in
Victorian London. I am the fifth generation Stannah and along with my brother Patrick,
we now run Stannah Stairlifts in the UK.
I started working here in 1993. My father thought it was very important that we started
at the bottom and worked our way up through the business, gaining experience all the way
through.
Joseph Stannah and Albert Stannah produced a set of values. We've developed those over
the years and are pretty much the values that we live and breathe today.
Our four key commitments are: quality of service that we provide to our customers, quality
of the products and how well designed they are, value for money and ensuring that we
are an honest and an ethical company that our customers can rely on. Those commitments
make up our promise to our customer, which is: we are always true to our word.
We put huge emphasis on quality, right the way through from design, testing, manufacture,
installation, service, customer service, the whole thing. There's a real culture of quality
within the organisation.
All of our stairlifts that we sell here in the UK are made here, in Andover, in our premises.
Each one is tested before it goes out of the door to make sure that when it gets to the
customer there are no problems with it.
Our first stairlift was manufactured in 1974 and today we have manufactured over 500,000
stairlifts. Our business is really all about enabling people to stay independent and stay
in the home that they love.
There are tremendous social benefits of staying in your own home because you're surrounded
by neighbours who you've been friendly with for years. With your loved furniture which
perhaps wouldn't fit in another location. Perhaps with your pets and animals which you
might not be able to take into a flat.
The stairlift really does change people's lives and, time and time again when we speak
to people, they tell us about how they wish that they had done it earlier.
That's the nice thing about the job that I do, in that every product that we supply,
hopefully is making a difference to a customer's life.
