Our warden services section looks after housing services for older people.
Anyone aged 55 or over can apply for sheltered housing.
These are specially designed flats located throughout the borough that offer the privacy of your
own home with the added security of an alarm service
and a sheltered housing officer for help and support.
You also have the choice of joining in a range of social events.
The flats are designed for either one or two people and are often set in attractive gardens
close to shops and local amenities. Doors are wide enough to fit a walking frame
and some flats have been specially adapted for wheelchair access or residents with mobility
problems. If you do want to move into our sheltered
accommodation and you are a council tenant who is moving from a larger sized property,
then you could also be entitled to a cash payment.
Extra care housing is similar to sheltered
housing but with flexible, individually tailored packages of care and support provided on site
24 hours a day. To register your interest in sheltered or
extra care housing, contact our lettings section
Another service we provide for older people and disabled residents is the WATCH lifeline
community alarm. This is an emergency home response alarm service,
that’s open 24 hours a day, every day of the year and is run by trained staff.
The equipment is easy to use and quick to install. All you need is a telephone line.
We supply a speech alarm unit and a special neck or wrist pendant for you to wear.
If you fall or are taken ill, you can press the red button on your pendant and this will
send an alarm signal to our community alarm centre.
Our experienced emergency wardens will be able to speak to you in any part of your home
through the lifeline alarm unit. They will give you advice and reassurance
and, if appropriate, visit your home to assist you.

We also have a Telecare alarm service specially
designed to provide help and support for people with dementia and sensory impairment, so they
can live independently. Sensors that detect risks like heat, overflowing
water, gas and movement are placed in various points around your home and are connected
to our 24-hour control centre. If a sensor is activated it will alert our
emergency wardens who will identify the problem and, if necessary, contact a family member,
friend, carer or the emergency services. To find out if you qualify for the Telecare
service, contact Adult Social Services’ Access team
