Terry: We're visiting today with Chuck Cargile, a 1987 OSU grad. He earned an accounting degree.
Today, he is the Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of Newport Corporation in Irvine, California.
Thanks for joining us today. Chuck: You're welcome.
Terry: We've got a few questions for you. We'll start off with
You've spoken to two or three classes today, did you enjoy speaking to classes here at the Spears School of Business?
Chuck: I did. I did enjoy speaking with three classes.
The first class was a general finance class, and the next two were both focused on real estate. So, it was a lot of fun talking to all three.
Terry: What is your impression of the students here at the Spears School of Business?
Chuck: There were three different groups.
The first one was a large group, and as I mentioned, it was more general finance-- probably about 50 people in the class.
The second one was a little bit smaller, focused on real estate. And the third one was the smallest.
And the way the format worked is, I would speak for about thirty minutes, maybe a little more
and then open it up for questions.
And when I was thinking about it on the way over here, I was worried that there wouldn't be any questions.
I had enough material that I could give examples but, I didn't want to just be talking about what I wanted to the whole time.
So, I was very pleased that we never ran out of questions. And I warned them all when I asked for question that I am very comfortable with long awkward pauses.
So if you're not going to ask any questions, it's going to be awkward here. But, I never had that problem. Very good questions and the students seemed interested.
It made it a good interaction.
Terry: What did you enjoy the most about your interaction with the students?
Chuck: I think what I liked the best during the Q&A was,
I can remember being here and being concerned about what I will do after I graduate, and what kind of job I will get with the training I have been given here and what I will do next.
And so, I made a point of talking to the students about what I had done each step of the way before I got to where I am now, to show that
there is a lot of interim steps that you have to take before you get to the final, whatever job that you have.
And I could see much interest in understanding the different avenues that you can take through a career. And, there were a number of questions that related to that.
That was good interaction because there were many students, juniors/seniors, that have the weight of the world,
wondering -what am I ever going to do- And, that's a hard apprehension when you're that age.
Terry: Thanks for taking the time to visit with us today. Chuck: You're welcome. Thank you.
