Great film. Thank you so much. What inspired you to make this movie?
You know, my producer Helen Estabrook gave me the book Labor Day. She said this is like
nothing you've ever done. It's like nothing you've ever said you wanted to do, but I have
a feeling you're going to love it, and she was right.
And what was it like working with Kate? She's such a legend.
Kate Winslet is the most prepared actress I've ever met. Her screenplay had more notes
in it than mine did, and she just bonded with Josh. She bonded with our young boy Gattlin
Griffith and frankly everyday I'd look at the screen and see her acting on it, and I'd
pinch myself. How could I possibly be directing Kate Winslet?
And were there any great stories on set? Any funny stories you can tell us?
You know, what's funny is that Josh Brolin made a pie every single day. I remember going
to visit him at his cottage, and he would show up at the door in an apron, this picture
of masculinity and talking on and on about the crust he just achieved. It was really
funny.
Now, have you tried an English pie?
Yeah, not yet.
Not yet? And now that you're in the UK, what do you love most about being here in the UK?
I know this will sound strange, but I love the weather.
