Hi, I’m Brenda Edmonds and I’m associate professor of mathematics and I’m currently
also co-director of the Office of Outcomes Assessment here at Johnson County Community
College. I’ve been here for a very long time – 16 years as both adjunct and full
time. I love both aspects of my job, both teaching math and working with the Office
of Outcomes Assessment. Our outcomes assessment process here at JCCC
is really very unique to many institutions, in that it is really kept very close to faculty
and students. We worked very hard here at the college to make sure the assessment process
is in the hands of faculty and as close to instruction as possible, so that it can really
be used to make a difference for students and faculty, so that the focus is entirely
on helping students become better at whatever it is their goals are here at the college.
We worked very hard and had wonderful support from the administration, staff and faculty
at all levels to make sure that this process really is useful by faculty and totally in
the hands of faculty. The process has been very organic – grown out of many committees
of faculty engagement and faculty involvement in developing a process that’s really useful
to students and faculty, and keeps the focus on improving student learning.
