Hi! I am Mark Middlebrook and I am here in the Paul Marcus Wines Cantina. And, in this
segment I am going to talk about Ruero Arneis, a wonderful white wine from Piemonte. Piemonte
is a region in northwest Italy, up against France. And, the Ruero is a subregion or zone
that is south of Torino, Turin and north of the town of Alba. Right across the river from
the zones of Barolo and Barbaresco in case you know those areas. In the Ruero, they grow
lots of red wine. Particularly Barbera and Nebbiolo and I love to drink those. But, what
the Ruero is really known for is its white wine. Specifically, wine made from a grape
variety called Arneis. So, the full name of this type of wine is Ruero Arneis. Name of
the place followed by the name of the grape variety. And, this particular one is made
by the producer Giovanni Almondo, a family producer in the Ruero. And, the bottling is
called Bricco della Ciliegie. It is one of the kind of famous Arneises from this area.
But, there are many, many other excellent producers of this style of wine. What I particularly
love about this kind of wine is its refreshing quality. The way it goes well with all kinds
of food. Particularly fish. I have had it with sushi many times and enjoyed it that
way. Typically, the wine is made without any oak. So, you do not get any oak influence.
It is bright, kind of mineral, floral a little bit. Types of flavors that really go down
easily, again, either as an aperitif or with various kinds of food. This particular bottling
Domenico, the wine maker does put a little bit of the wine into oak barrels, just to
give it a little more texture. It is a little bit unique style for this wine. I highly recommend
drinking the Ruero Arneis all the time. Again, as an aperitif, whenever you are having seafood,
pork, chicken, anything that you would have a white wine with, this is a good white wine
to drink along with it.
