Hi! My name is Austin Shepard with Expert Village. I am here today to talk to you about
watering your plants. It is very important not to over water your plants. It is really
the biggest mistake of your average household plant owner. If you have a plant that is normally
outside but you are keeping it indoors, you don't have to water it as much as you would
have to water it if it was an outdoor plant that is because it doesn't get as much sunlight
as an outdoor plant would and doesn't have so much dirt around it to suck up the extra
moisture. So think about it this way, if you have a plant that is growing in a pot and
you fill it with water and you over water, where is all the water going to go. When it
is time to water your plant, you will know it by putting your finger about 4 to 6 inches
down into the dirt. Not just putting your fingers onto the edges seeing if there is
water there. It could be very moist at the surface but it could be very very dry where
the roots are. So a lot of times people actually get a tool which almost looks like a pen with
a hook on the end of it. You put it into the soil and if the soil near the bottom of the
pen is kind of moist, then it means that the plant has enough water. When the soil at the
bottom of your pen is dry, it means that the root at the bottom of the pot aren't getting
enough water so then it is time to give it a good little watering. If it is an indoor
plant, you only really need to water it about once a week unless the plant takes up a lot
of water. You also have a plant like a peace lily which you can grow in soil or it can
actually thrive inside of water. So you can get something like a fish tank or fish bowl
and let it grow and thrive.
