Quitters never win, and winners never quit -- and it was a lesson of perseverance, which
I think speaks to each of you every day. I was the only starting fifth grader on our
fifth and sixth grade football team, and midway through the season, I got fired. Coach said,
"You're not starting anymore." So I handled it by quitting. And my Dad and I spoke that
night, and he said, "Son, you know, you're losing your vision and we don't know if it's
going to stop deteriorating or if you'll become totally blind. You'll have to work harder,
you're going to have to be more creative, to get half as much as the next guy." You
know, those are the realities we all deal with all of the time. We have to work a little
harder, a little smarter, we have to be a little more diligent in what we do, because
we've got something going on in our lives. And, you know, what I think the good news
is is that everyone has something going on in their lives, so no matter what your challenge
has been, the fact that you're here tells me something about you. It says you've got
the tenacity and the stick-to-it-tiveness to make not only your life better, but the
lives of the people who are in your life better.
