Hi, I’m Pam Clothier from Warwickshire College.
Warwickshire College is a very large further education college;
we have centres in Leamington Spa,
Moreton Morrell, Rugby,
Pershore and Trident.
We run a wide variety of courses, from Level 1
and up to and including to degree courses.
We have a number of support provisions within the college, mostly
which are accessible via our Student Services Department.
We would really encourage applicants to disclose very very early on, hopefully
at Year 10 so that we can discuss with the individual applicant,
parents or any other person who wants to come with them, what their needs are
are and whether we can actually meet those needs.
We have support staff around all our centres, we have learning support assistants who will work
in the classroom or some of the separate library areas or separate classrooms.
We have a teacher of the deaf, we have
a number of learning support assistants,
we have
educational communicators,
tutors for dyslexia, literacy and numeracy.
We will provide support on the basis of discussion with the
applicant and documentation that we will get about them,
this might be something from the schools or from the Careers Advisers;
there might be some medical information.
We will ask the applicant
what is difficult for them at school,
how they have solved
some of those difficulties and how we can continue to solve them
once they come to college.
Once we have applicants on courses and they become students, they can
go to our Student Services areas which we have on every centre
and ask for help.
They might get the information on any monies/funding
that they could get hold of, they might be referred to our counsellors
they might be referred back to me for some additional learning support.
We have residential provision at Moreton Morrell and at Pershore and there is a nurse
that works closely with residential students
and we also have residential wardens.
The important thing for us is applicants disclose to us any difficulties they have,
as early as possible – we can’t put in support, we can’t discuss it, look at funding
funding unless we have that information early, the earlier we get it the more likely we are to have
a plan in place and that plan
to work from the very beginning. It’s very difficult to get disclosure later on
once the student gets behind, makes it difficult for the students to catch up. So please, please
tell us as early as you can and then we can make our plan of action.
