I think the ATO is a very large organisation that deals with a wide range of issues and
also works with a lot of other government agencies as well as tax payers. I knew that
the ATO would offer me a wide variety of work and I would also get the chance to meet different
people from diverse backgrounds (and). I thought those factors would make the ATO a very interesting
and rewarding place to work.
I think the ATO Graduate Program is a very comprehensive and well supported program.
For our Law tax finance Graduates we have technical training every week which helped
us develop tax knowledge and we also had corporate training every now and then which helped us
build critical personal / interpersonal skills.
We had graduate no we had rotation managers who provided us with on the job training and
most importantly we had our graduate manager who was always there for us whenever we had
either work related issues or even personal issues.
My highlight of the year was being able to let the taxpayer talk through their problem
over the phone understand the whole issue, quickly do some research on our system properly
digest the information based on my current knowledge and explain it back to the Taxpayer
in a clear and effective way and it really brightened up my day when I was able to solve
a taxpayers problem to their satisfaction and I wouldn't imagine myself doing that without
going through all the technical training and call centre training provided by the ATO.
I'm very fortunate to work for the ATO who invested a lot of time and money on training
and development for graduates. I was able to identify my skills gap and develop those
capabilities through training as well as all sorts of challenging work in different rotations
and I think some of the key capabilities that I developed throughout the year are very important
to me in terms of building my future career.
