The Hear Service program is designed to enable you to manage the everyday problems
that hearing loss creates
Hearing loss is really common. It impacts on
one in three people over the age of fifty but there are some straightforward
tactics that you can use to change the environment, gets some family and peer
support for to enable you to participate in communication.
The Hear Service program is aimed at particularly people over fifty
people whose hearing has just fallen off a bit., which is typical of the ageing process.
the program involves three basic steps. First of all we want you to become more
aware of how hearing impacts on you on a day-to-day basis
most of us don't know what we're not hearing
The second thing we teach you is how to understand what's causing those hearing
problems. The third thing we teach you is how too manage those problems in a straightforward way.
Most of us on a day-to-day basic go 'uh', 'what', 'what did you say?'
and we think no-one notices. But when we do it all the time people do notice, and they do get irritated.
Look, there are times when it's really quite appropriate just to bluff
and not tell people that you've got a hearing loss.
But there are some practical things you can do. Our big enemies
are background noise -
so if you go into cafes or restaurants, pick places that are quieter,
pick places that have carpet on the floor, pick places that havecarpet
or soft furnishings on the walls.
If you're having people over for dinner,
don't have the stereo on in the background - you're not going to be able to hear.
When you're sitting down somewhere don't be looking in the light. You probably think
you can't lip read, but you'd be surprised how much you're actually lip reading
- you need to be able to see people's faces.
We teach you these basic strategies that you can put into place on a day-to-day
basis.
Getting involved in the program is very straightforward
