This Project For Awesome video is about the charity, LEAD-K, which stands for Language
Equality & Acquisition for Deaf Kids.
LEAD-K is a national campaign promoting equal access to ASL and English for d/Deaf and hard
of hearing children, especially those from ages zero to five.
LEAD-K was created because more often than not, hearing parents to deaf children are
made to believe that their deaf kids will be inferior to hearing children and won’t develop if
they use ASL instead of speaking English.
However, it's been proven otherwise.
>From their website: “ASL is a human right that belongs to all Deaf children ensuring
them to acquire both a natural and visual language and a bridge to acquiring the national
language, English. ASL is a human right, not merely an option.”
So many people are against d/Deaf and hard of hearing children learning sign language,
but with our support and donations, we can fight back.
This campaign is especially important to me because I grew up to be…
A “hearing person”.
As in, I was raised to be mainstream, oral, and I wasn’t given access to ASL.
I’m 24-years-old and it was just a couple of months ago that I finally got access to
ASL and I am finally able to learn it.
But I and many, many other d/Deaf and hard of hearing children that grew up with hearing
parents and what have you -
They didn’t get this kind of access.
This is a very common thing.
And we have got to educate these people.
