Driver distraction for truckers is even more problematic because trucks are much larger,
much harder to slow, much harder to maneuver than an ordinary passenger car. Under the
Federal Motor Carrier Safety regulations, a truck driver may not use a cellphone or
text while operating a tractor-trailer combination. There is a complete ban on that. Not only
are truckers not allowed to text or talk on the phone, the hands-free devices are also
limited as well and that goes back to being distracted. Studies will show that distracted
driving isn’t necessarily a result of if you are using a phone, it's not necessarily a result
of the trucker holding the phone, it’s because they’re engaged in a conversation and their
concentration, their thoughts are someplace else instead of on the road, which was where a truck
driver should have had his or her attention.
