Having epilepsy through school
having so many seizures, made me tired
I had seizures in class so my grades did suffer
I was asleep a lot of the time through school.
I had to have average twelve hours sleep for every seizure
sometimes I'd have two seizures during school.
You could pinpoint it
and you could just see, my scores dropping
and... I think that was because I was having the absence seizures, really.
And it wasn't... it hadn't been picked up on then.
But, at the time I was getting really upset
because my scores were dropping
and I've always been very competitive
and I didn't like the fact that I wasn't achieving.
At primary school, I'm told that the headteacher
told my parents not to push me too much
not to expect too much.
My siblings were top of the class
and I was sort of, bottom of the class.
I went to secondary school, I improved
but I was still struggling
I was falling in with the wrong crowd of people
and generally, I didn't do particularly well.
And that had a knock on effect of me questioning my own abilities.
But, I got quite a lot of support from my mum
to try and be a bit more ambitious about my goals.
And I worked very hard from Year 9 onwards
and I managed to get by.
