Hello and welcome back to Schnille och Schmaks video blog.
It's the first episode of the year, so we'll take the opportunity to
taste the beer that was BrewDogs' first beer, back in the day, Punk IPA.
They brewed the first time in March 2007, but now have felt that it's not as great as it can be.
In April 2010 they started figuring how to change it, experimented a little, resulting in a new Punk IPA.
The new Punk IPA is a little different from the old one. Lower alcohol, 5.6% instead of 6,0% ABV.
The same hop varieties: Chinook, Simcoe, Athanum and Nelson Sauvin, but the hopping is different.
They now have dry hopped and kettle hopped later in the boil. No dry hopping in the old Punk IPA.
The malt base is a little darker. It will be interesting to taste the difference.
I have the old one fresh in my memory.
It's not that warm outside, so I'm using gloves, but Carl and Ingo are more macho than I.
The color is a lovely golden, a nice white thick foam, visible carbonation and clear liquid.
A fruity aroma, as expected tropical fruits. Kiwi, litchi and black currant.
I agree, a wonderful fruity tone from the hops. The Nelson Sauvin character is very present.
Very crisp and a nice large aroma.
The old Punk IPA was pretty tart, dry and bitter. This is obviously a different beer.
It is softer, has some residual sweetness and not at all the same sharp bitterness.
They have lowered the bitterness from 68IBU to 45IBU by changing the hopping schedule.
You are right. Not at all the tartness, it is smoother and easier to drink.
I have a friend who really does not like Punk IPA, I believe he will think this is a better beer,
since it is not so rough and obtuse in its bitterness.
So, what is the verdict?
I didn't like the old Punk IPA that much. It was OK, but not excellent.
I bought it every now and then as a stock-IPA that was always available at the monopoly store.
I like this better. More fruits and simpler. It will be a guest in my fridge. "Better" (5/7)
-For 20kr and readily available, "Better" (5/7) -And it's available in cans! Great!
I think it's better than the old one. I sampled a very fresh one, after receiving a case of beer
for photographing the AGM last fall. That was the best one I had sampled. This one is better.
Don't just take our word for it, here are some guests!
I think it tastes more alive than the old one. It was a bit tired with a lot of bitterness.
This one is more fruity and alive. It has a more rounded taste with more sweetness. It is better.
A masterpiece in a can!
I would have liked a little more bitterness.
What the hell, it tastes good.
A little watery.
3,5.
3,75.
It's a very good beer.
I think the tropical fruits are very noticeable up front. In the old one they were subtle, but now very overt.
It's a lot sweeter also. I think this could be my new summer beer!
It's sweeter, not at all as bitter as the old one. More balanced, "LAGOM"
