Downloading E-books: In this video, you will learn how to find
E-books through Catalyst and how to access and
download these E-books. The Johns Hopkins University maintains subscriptions
to a vast number of online databases and resources. These include a number of E-book
databases that Hopkins students are free to use.
Some major E-book databases that you may encounter include EBL, Gale, and Safari. Each
database maintains a different set of rules on using and sharing their E-books. To learn
more about general E-book information, please see
the E-books guide, accessible through the library
homepage. Before we get to downloading an E-book, we
must first find an E-book of interest. To begin, we
will go to the library homepage, "library.jhu.edu." In the Catalyst box here, we will type in
our keyword, "Lincoln," and hit submit. By
default, Catalyst gives us all available search options.
However, since we are looking for a book and not an article, we will select "Catalog."
To limit our results to only online resources we will
check the box at the top of the page marked "Show
only items available online," and hit "Search." Let us scroll down and click on "The Writings
of Abraham Lincoln." In the Find It box to the
right, we see that the database EBL has a copy of the book available online. When you
click on the link, you will be prompted to login with
you JHED ID and password. To view the book, we click on the "Read
Online" button. From here, we can preview and read
the entire book. To download the book, we click on the "Download" tab on the left
side of the screen. In order to download the E-book, you
must have Adobe Digital Editions installed on your
computer. If you do not have Adobe Digital Editions installed, follow the links and instructions
to install Adobe Digital Editions. When you are ready to download, hit the Download
button and choose to open the file with Adobe Digital Editions. If this is your first
time using Adobe Digital Editions, it will prompt you
to login with you Adobe ID. If you do not have an Adobe ID, select "Create an Adobe
ID" and follow the instructions. An Adobe ID allows
you to transfer E-books between multiple computers and mobile devices.
Once you have logged in with your Adobe ID and password, your E-book will be available
for you to read on your computer.
In summary, use the Catalyst search engine to find and access online E-books. Download
E- books to your computer using Adobe Digital
Editions.
