Hi, I’m Martha. I am an EL teacher in the Juvenile Court and Community School system.
and today, I’m going to show you a quick tour of Rosetta Stone software, which is something
we use in all of our EL classes.
All of our CELDT level one and two kids are entitled to have a Rosetta Stone account.
We use Rosetta Stone in conjunction with the Keys to Learning text,
so it comprises about one half of their coursework at JCCS.
To start off with, every kid has a user name, which is a “magic number” and is typically
six digits, 272584
so let’s start off with 272584, so this kid, this is an actual account,
and the password is “password”, so you enter “password” in all lower case. Now
normally you would sign in and it would bring you to a screen., a series of screens actually,
and it would open up the program, but
in this case, I’m going to show you the Rosetta Stone tour of their curriculum.
So I’m going to click on “first time users” and I want to show you
what this “Dynamic Immersion” technique is, and test it out
(Announcer’s voice): “Of course, the best way to understand the power of dynamic immersion
is to experience it for yourself in a new language, say, Turkish for example.
You’ll start at the very beginning, learning a few words, so you’ll want to pay careful
attention right from the start. You’ll quickly build those
words into sentences in just a few seconds.
l’ll go away so you can focus on the language and check back when you’re finished”
kadin, oglan, kiz, adam,kadin, oglan
kiz, adam, Now you try, kadin, (harp music signals correct answer), oglan, (harp music)

kadin yiyor (Martha’s voice repeats), kadin yiyor (harp), kiz okuyor (harp)
oglan ve kiz kosuyorlar (harp)
adam ve oglan iciyorlar (new sound, incorrect)
(Martha’s voice “oops!”), adam ve aglan iciyorlar, (harp)
kiz ve kadin okuyorlar (incorrect sound),
kiz ve kadin okuyorlar (harp), adam ve kadin yiuorlar (Martha’s voice repeats,
adam ve kadim….hmmm, hits incorrect response)
adam ve kadin yiyorlar (harp)
Narrator: Now that you’re finished, consider what you’ve learned, new language for people
and acitons and the structures you need to build complete sentences,
all on your own, immersed in a new language with no translation or grammar rules in just
a few minutes!
Imagine what you can do in the language you want to learn!
Martha’s voice: So that’s a quick taste of Rosetta Stone, of the methodology of Rosetta
Stone. It uses images and intuition, instruction,
to provide instruction, its highly interactive and it’s a total immersion method.
There are other screens that require you to speak and to repear athto record your voice
and those are great too.
and, of course, it’sjust a part of our EL curriculum, so thank you very much and I hope
you enjoyed this!
