Hi everyone welcome to JC's quiz show, I'm JC, this episode is going out on boxing day
however I'm not going to be asking Danny and Gerard to box unfortunately,
it's a bit tricky over Skype what we are going to be talking about however
is the ultimate turducken so those of you who celebrate Christmas probably had a big
meal yesterday some of you might have even had a turducken which is a... what is it?
it's a chicken inside of a duck inside of a turkey
I've had a turduckence which is that plus a geece
nice, Ok you'll like this round what are they all put inside of each other
then? yeah,
also known as a 3 bird roast or a royal roast ah
there's also 5 bird roasts available and there's been lots of coverage of various 10 bird roasts
and 12 bird roasts that have been made
however I've gone and looked up the ultimate one
from 1807, that was featured in an Almanach des Gourmands by gastronomist Grimod de La
Reynière and it was a rôti sans pareil which means
incomparable roast and it has a LOT of birds, one inside the
other inside the other inside the other so in this round I'm going to give you the
name of a bird and you've got to tell me true or false, if
you think it was included inside this absolute monstrosity of a meal
Danny first, yeah
the first bird is pigeon, do you think there was a pigeon inside
I would put a pigeon in there so yes yeah it seems feasible however I'm afraid
there wasn't man they missed a trick
they really did yeah Gordon Ramsey says pigeon is great so...
so Gerard next, the next bird is a pheasant, do you think they managed to fit a pheasant
inside it I think pheasant's feasible, 1800s, did they
have pheasants there? yeah, pheasant yeah you would be correct so 1 point to Gerard,
Ok so next bird Danny is a Thrush again I would think why not? I think I'm looking
at this wrong I'm just thinking well that's a bird, put it in!
I think you might be looking at it the right way but yeah
so erm, so yeah stuff it throw a thrush in there why not?
that is correct they did, I think that's probably the right attitude I think the guy who made
this was like "how many birds are there? OK..." OK so, Gerard, the next animal is a peacock
Imagine in the 1800s, I've been to enough National Trust places to know they keep peacocks
running about to look pretty and I don't think they'd waste them by eating them so no. No
peacock erm you are correct, there wasn't a peacock,
sorry my kittens just like attacking my legs stop getting that cute cat come on gerard
you're not going to win extra points with your kitten gerard
vote for me! no it's not working sorry
this isn't X factor, get off! OK so Danny, swan,
I'm going to say no to swan, only because currently in the UK it's a protected animal
and you can't kill them without permission of the queen
which is true yes. so I'm going to say no
and you would be correct, they didn't want a war with england clearly
yeah logic boom OK so Gerard
this is it Gerard all or nothing I need to get this
you need this one to win otherwise it will go to a tie breaker, so the final bird is
a partridge, did they put a partridge in it? first thing I'm thinking here is partridge
in a pear tree and that's what you're given
but was it in a 4 bird roast? that's the question in a pear tree... are we eating them?
the pears? I'm imagining a partridge is quite small so
I'm going to say no I'm afraid there was a partridge, there wasn't
a pear tree however, so it's currently 2 all yeah that's right so it goes to a tie breaker,
so for the tie breaker question I ask you both the same question and you both guess
a number and the closest number wins. OK
now in case you haven't already guessed what the question is going to be, the question
is how many birds in total would you think there was in the rôti sans pareil
15 and Gerard?
16 I'm afraid the answer was 17
oh! woohoo!
Gerard wins well done congratulations sir
congratulations Gerard Groves it was a bustard stuffed with a turkey, a
goose, a pheasant, a chicken, a duck, a guinea fowl, a teal, a woodcock, a partridge, a plover,
a lapwing, a quail, a thrush, a lark, an ortolan bunting and a garden warbler
so there you go, sounds delicious yeah
who would use that many birds? I think he was just showing off to be honest
I'd have that yeah
so we will see you next time so after that round it's 2 points each and
Gerard gets a win hi everyone thanks for watching today's episode
