we are speaking with congresswoman jan should have ski from illinois thank you
so much for being here i think it'd what's your impression of the conference
from the time you spend here today so i a positive is it scared
uh... i'd only been here for a little while but by you know progressives art
tough bunch
i've been to probably every one of these uh... the these conferences and
and clearly it doesn't have the uh... euphoria of the new uh... obama
administration because that's never possible governing it's tough
it's not new anymore right and at hotmail anymore
uh... but i think that um... that this is always a incubator for all kinds of
new strategies for
uh... organizing for a message ng uh... and so i think there's a kinda roll up
your sleeves on
let's make sure we are keep it on the main november elections my impression is
bad enough it's disheartening to motivate people when there's not uh... a
presidential election even though the election coming up in november
still be very big uh... do you
feel like that may be a factor that when there's a presidential election coming
up work one party can take back to the white house so to speak
that use year to get people monday august and i don't know that in my
lifetime however see such a motivator electorate
uh... as a large during united for the uh... obama election
um... but
this election is definitely going to hinge on turnout who actually comes to
the the polls
and more mecca for mine to work were pretty good at that i'm weak we'd know
and especially since the i'm organizing for america which was held by my for
america star organization that
that exists in
has all of the
uh... ability to reach out to two people um... that we're going to be able to
mobilize her our folks just through the nitty-gritty hard work
and of course as you said that there's certainly a lot of huge issues on the
air
the table and make it worth people
worth it for people to go to the dot the polls the choices are just being
mormons right now
uh... in it the you know it's about our are we going to uh...
go back to the failed policies that we're gonna actually
move ahead in the right direction i think one of the
ways to to sell this thing is to say for example uh...
you know meet congressman paul ryan if they uh... if republicans win holding
out of the budget committee he wants to eliminate medicare
and turn it into about your program
is that a good idea and so he won't we definitely know about some of the risks
especially if we did for the the democrats lose seats to republicans but
in thinking about some of the primary races that are going on within the
democrats party
sometimes i get a little concerned that when there are of
more progressive candidates they're challenging incumbent democrats that if
they do win
they're not necessarily going to be better candidates or at least more
likely to win in november in the general election and it's obviously much easier
to get excitement going with the idea of changes we subrata obama do
let me get to november
they may lose the seed altogether to a republican is that a concern to you with
some of these primaries now actually not i think that and well first of all some
of the the incumbent i think are clearly are are going to uh... to win it
certainly a challenge by the way further republicans as well because the uh...
tea party candidates uh... would where they win they may have been really
narrow
uh...
general action
base to acceptable from a newbie hard for them to to go after uh...
the independents
but but i think that uh... one of those factors is going to be
exciting are based on uh... to be able to gap
are reliable voters out
in a in a place like uh... like illinois were we are centrally uh... uh... a blue
state sure were we're going to need and we do have candidates who are
very clear on their positions on the uh... issues and distinguish them very
themselves very clearly from the uh... the republicans how well did you know
barrack obama before he was even a senator being beamed from illinois well
i said to the family is that the state senator i was in the house of
representatives uh... when he was in a
illinois house when he was in the air
uh... state senate
and so i knew him band so what's that probably go in and fourteen some
fourteen years
so i was uh... very involved in his u_s_ senate campaign in the primary right
and then uh... one of the co-chairs of his presidential campaign do you think
that i'm hearing from a lot of listeners
that's something he was doing really well during the campaign and they can
always identify exactly what it is
he's not doing now in terms of connecting with people in terms of
inspiring the same
hope and uh... just kind of mobilizing an inspiring people to get active can
you identify anything that he's doing differently do you disagree that he's
doing anything differently will what do you think is going on well i think you
know that
uh... electing somebody that the tux that peter deforest always doubt
election night we're candidate wins and then you have to get down to the
neutered nitty-gritty
of actually governing i think one of the problems we've had is that we haven't
and i'm not sure exactly why
been able to communicate other dot the the positive sellers people othello you
know blah blah blah sounds like a politician
but is is just an empirical
that this session of congress and the these first two years that the
administration have been the most productive
in the
um... recent history of our country in the eastern side of the number of
the pieces of legislation that have been passing me ticket
pieces of legislation dealing with health care
with the environment with jobs
without into units dramatic changes in our foreign policy
um... at our foreign policy philosophy
um... it and and yet
you know it it's like
there's still this feeling that what it what are we really uh... accomplishing
and in just a
the health-care legislation alone in their and the changes that it's going to
mean not in a couple years though right now
for children with pre-existing conditions for kids who can't can stay
now on there
policies and small businesses that will be able to afford and it just turned
that things many of at least our listeners agree that a lot significant
has happened
but especially over the last three months and that the amount of you know
we'd get which is one barometer you know everybody every different shows cavity
for an audience in the dividers you get into a very
has really been that
people don't seem to be as inspire
urged that the president is
i hate to use this term the decide ur in the same way that maybe george w_ bush
was making the wrong decisions i had thought add wanna make clear um... is
that demeanor is that
because it's much easier to talk about all the things you'll do before you left
and then you've got to do them one by one and what do you think that what are
the respect unless they get off your ***
organize them
you know is it would be easiest thing to do list
sit back and of well as me and how can he isn't doing this and i'm so
disappointed
and um... you know used to be
how do i love the let me count the ways barackobama sugar and now it's you know
high let let me count on my disa disappointments well you know what we
need and he said this from the start
if people don't stay involved then the change isn't going to happen is hard
we've got all the same corporate interests we have all the same enemies
out there
pulp and and and and and standing huge dollars
but could be p and the full page ads which is so outrageous yet they're
taking that they're taking out right now
look at the discipline court decision
that now let's corporations get involved in political advertising just like
you know that same writers individuals well these are really hard things to
fight
so get out the into something about instead of emailing me he said why don't
stop emailing davis and and you know don't get involved in the campaign so
that we don't lose control of the house of representatives
uh... electa as progressive era a candidate as you
as you can but i think frankly i'm just pretty sick company
uh... you know
for progress is being in the business of
pointing out all the the mistakes and not lifted a finger
you know to to work harder
absolutely
and my last question because i know you have to go on the issue of b_p_ high saw
this
seemed to all of the that horrible components of what's going on in
louisiana has an opportunity for brocco bomb into really push
and said this is now the time from tentative energy
and to become the energy president george w_ bush had an opportunity to
wasn't interested he didn't do it rock obama still could do you think this is
the time and and what could he do right now that he's not doing in terms of
alternate energy
this absolutely is the time right now
time you know
eat what i think i just conduct louisiana tip today
this is uh...
catastrophe of the book called proportions
that's going on right now in if we don't use that as a asap realistic
but maybe not only have two winners also for not what we have to wean ourselves
from all al often uh... altogether
but i'd also on a state of the political wisdom
where's the passion i want a something barack obama is who he is
and you know if you're looking for the kind of
to dramatic passion
e that's not only is
uh... you know well-balanced during the campaign all of the people talked about
how he was truthful
you know where was in the debates is that the other night passionate
announcement
i mean i think i think that the the kind of deliberates
uh... but don't mistake that for not having a steely spying he has just
released by
but he you know of ups in that uh...
uh... a real emotional guy doesn't have these wide swings serve
uh... of
dem demonstrable motion what'd rank it seems like interview he points to the
stars don't think they're getting into that that's ridiculous
that and the policy front
this is and opportunity to pulley
and um... and i think persuasively say
americans
this is not going to be the
lee situation if we don't do something about this we're going to have these
kinds of
disasters and so let's move ahead make those kinds of investments
that we need to do right now
to set ourselves on this new and passed
the energy bill for crying out loud in the in the senate
and let's get moving their sentences there's no time to waste we've been
