The purpose of the English Language Institute
is to help students improve their English skills
to meet University standards.
ELI is for international students, American students,
and anyone else who wants to improve
their English skills.
I want to understand the English language better;
specifically its grammar usage,
writing techniques, and its rules.
As I understand, I know my skills will improve.
There are about 60 to 70 students
who enter the program every year.
Students come from all over the world.
Some students come from the Middle East, Asia, Europe,
or even South America;
they come here to learn and prepare themselves
so they can transfer to Gallaudet University.
My name is Fatuiu Namirullau and I'm from India.
You know India?
I'm from the island just south of there, Sri Lanka.
I'm from Nigeria.
I'm from South Korea.
Pakistan.
I like to play cricket, football...
I like fixing cars!
Traveling...
Volleyball...
I'm from Venezuela.
I'm from Albania!
I'm from France.
The ELI students can participate in ELISO,
the student organization that supports ELI students.
ELISO isn't only for current ELI students,
but also for those who graduated from ELI
or any other undergraduate and graduate students.
I came to Gallaudet to learn ASL.
Before ELI, I knew nothing!
Now, after being here,
I've learned so much from ELI's help and support.
Being in DC, I've seen and learned so much!
Thanks to ELI at Gallaudet,
I've learned where the cafeteria is, where I can study,
and where my classrooms are.
ELI has helped me learn ASL
and be able to communicate with others, thanks to Gallaudet.
I'm looking forward to studying the English language
until I feel confident.
From there, I want to enter the undergraduate program
and become an international teacher.
The international students really want
to immerse themselves with the American culture.
They understand there are cultural differences
but what we need from you, the Gallaudet community
here on campus -- such as faculty, staff, and students,
to get involved with ELI.
Come and visit the International office here
and get to know us.
I encourage the students here to go out
and meet other Americans.
I know the culture differences can be challenging
but encouragement, community involvement,
and different events will help both sides mesh well together.
