An important change from the mid-20th century to the present day
is the increase in the rights of women.
The pin behind me, while small, represents a large milestone
along the path to women's equality in Virginia.
The button reads "Mary Sue Terry for Governor,"
and although her political campaign for governor was unsuccessful,
she achieved political statuses previously unheard of for women within the commonwealth.
In Terry's 1993 bid for governor, she raised considerable funding
from individuals and businesses, while boasting 8 times more expenditures
on campaign advertisements than her opponent, George Allen.
As a symbolic representation of her devotion to her campaign,
the Mary Sue Terry button is one of many examples of her well-publicized
gubernatorial campaign.
