>>NARRATOR: As the Tommie Searches: Episode 4, Phone Interview Failure
When we last left Tommie, he revealed to his classmate that his application had
not been accepted, but remained optimistic that he would gain an interview for the other
internship he applied for. Today, Tommie's roommate walks into their dorm room and sees
Tommie waiting by the phone.
>>ROOMMATE: Hey Tommie! What's up?
>>TOMMIE: Hey. I'm just waiting for this call. I'm about to do a phone interview.
>>ROOMMATE: Oh man, that is exciting! Are you ready?
>>TOMMIE: Well, uh. I guess? I mean, it's just like talking to you on the phone, right?
What's there to be ready for?
>>ROOMMATE: Uh, there are a lot of differences... you didn't prepare at all?
>>TOMMIE: Well, I--[phone rings] Shh! It's my interview! [Answers phone] What up, man?
Yeah, it's Tommie. [pauses] [background noise of TV]
What? Say that again, I can't hear you over my TV.
[Pauses] Oh, my resume? Uh, hang on; I don't have it on hand.
[Drawers banging]
Here it is! So, you wanted to know-- [phone buzzes]
Wait. I have another call. Hang on a second, I'll be right back.
[Answers call] Hey Zach! Wassup?
[Pauses] Dinner tonight? I'll be there! Let's meet at Scooters.
[Pauses] Alright, man. [Switches back to the interviewer] Hey, sorry,
we can get on with this interview. Yeah, I do have experience with working with
customers; it says it right on the resume you have- Oh, um, is there any way we can
hurry this up? [Pauses] Oh- okay! Well, if you have any questions,
just give me a buzz! [Hangs up]
>>ROOMMATE: Oh geez, Tommie
>>TOMMIE: What?
>>ROOMMATE: You really need to work on your phone interview skills.
Um, you know, maybe you should meet with a counselor at the Career Development Center.
I did it last week and I learned a lot! They'll give you tips on interviewing and
even run through a mock interview. They'll also probably tell you that you
shouldn't leave the TV on during an interview, or that you should always have a resume on hand.
They'll also tell you to never take another call during an interview, and always have
plenty of time planned to talk to the interviewer.
It's not just like talking to one of your friends on the phone, man.
>>TOMMIE: Yeah, maybe I'll do that.
>>NARRATOR: Will Tommie schedule an appointment with the Career Development Center?
Will he still have a chance to get his dream internship?
Will we ever find out the results of the Tommie-Johnnie game?
Find out on the next "As the Tommie Searches" brought to you by the University of St. Thomas
Career Development Center!
