Hi guys!
There's a good reason if my hair are tied and I took off high heels
in fact today we're are going to talk about "posture"
Posture is very important in everyone's life but especially for singers
As I told in the first episode of the series our instrument is our body
as every other instruments, even our body needs a good posture to "sound" properly.
If we talk about drums, guitar or cello
we all know there's a certain position that makes the instruments sound better
in that position we can also play the instrument for many hours without getting tired.
Even for our body there's a suggested position in which it sounds better
and in which our body breathe in the best way possible.
With a proper position we can perform without getting tired too quickly
but also reaching the best results.
When we talk about the "position of our body" we talk about "posture".
"Posture" it's the position of every singer's instrument.
Today I will show you how to place your body in the space.
As I told before i took off my heels because every singer needs contact with the ground.
Talking about singing, this "idea" is called "grounding".
For these first lessons I suggest, for the girls in particular, to wear comfortable shoes
because heels can prevaricate your thoughts.
Try to learn the proper singing "posture" even on your bare feet.
When you'll be able to maintain the proper posture
dynamically and statically, and that means while you're walking or while you're sitting on a chair
and remember that we can sing even if we are sitting on a chair,
until you've managed to practice the correct posture, try to wear comfortable shoes.
Let's start with our feet.
Our feet are the foundation of our instrument.
They need to be solid and strongly anchored to the ground
because it's on our feet that we lean our entire body.
Everyone's "posture" has physical attributes that we must consider
but there are a few approaches that's better to avoid.
Many singers tend to stand most of the time with all their weight leant on the forefoot
as they were standing on tiptoe
Another wrong posture it's the one with all the weight leant on the heel.
Now I'm going to show you what I'm talking about.
Both these positions are wrong because they doesn't give to your body the proper support
All you need to care about it's the contact between the ground and the sole of your feet
you need to focus on what we have called "grounding".
As soon as the weight is well balanced on your feet
your body/instrument will be more stable.
So always try to distribute your weight on the whole sole of your feet.
Your feet must be parallel
Always try to avoid different kind of positioning, like the one I'm showing you...
or maybe this one...
The distance between your feet must concur with the width of your pelvis (or shoulders)
There's one thing I want to tell every women's watching: don't underestimate yourself
by thinking you have a large rear end
and consequently by choosing odd positioning of your feet
because for a singer that's not a good way of standing.
In the same way I want give boys an advice: if you want to act like a rocker
don't stand with your legs wide apart, because your body will fluctuate a lot in this position
if a member of your band hit you during a concert you will lose your balance.
As I said the distance between your feet must concur with the width of your pelvis
or maybe the width of your shoulders.
The position of your legs it's important at least as much as the position of your feet.
I see a lot of students that tend to stiffen their legs while performing
but if your tighten your legs too much you won't feel the contact with the ground anymore.
So try always to keep your legs tonic and vibrant
imagine you are about to make a movement.
So remember to flex your knees a little, but not too much bent or too straight...
You need to keep your legs in a comfortable position but not too much relaxed...
Another important aspect of a singer's "posture"
it's the pelvis position
because the pelvis it's the barycenter of our body.
When you're not able to stand straight it's because your pelvis it's not properly balanced.
Now I will show you the most common position many students adopt during their first lessons
There are some differences between men and women. Let's start with the girls...
Girls have a marked arching here on their back
which defines a beautiful "rear end" that boys loves so much
but it's also very wrong when you talk about posture
because that kind of arching doesn't allow a proper diaphragmatic support.
So that's the most common "wrong" position in women.
When we talk about men on the other hand, they tend to have an onwards pelvis
something like that...
In men's case too, the higher abdominal muscles tend to press the diaphragm.
My advice it's too follow this lessons series in front of a mirror...
and pay attention to your posture
try to focus on your feet and legs position but especially on your pelvis.
Depending on your natural position try to adjust it according to what i've showed you before.
Remember that the correct positioning of the pelvis is alligned with the rest of your body.
