Sir, I think we have come to a point where we need to start project SEL, and here I ask
for your permission to carry on.
Permission granted.
The world before 1883 has no organisations to cater the youth to develop Christian character
by the use of semi-military discipline and Christian teachings. But we do know something
familiar about teaching Christianity which has already started earlier than that, and
that is the Sunday School. That's good for the kids, but what about the teenagers?
So we thank Sir William Alexander Smith for starting the Boys' Brigade. The idea came
to him because he was commissioned into the Rifle Volunteers earlier and also became a
Sunday School teacher. The first Boys' Brigade company started in 1883. Sure & Stedfast as
it goes, with its inception in Glasgow, the Boys' Brigade quickly spread across its homeland
and became an international organisation.
Nevertheless, it has reached Malaysia in 1946 before the independence of Malaya. It first
landed in Penang with the founding of the 1st Penang Company by Mr. Robert Davis with
Mr. Geh Hun Kheng as the Company Captain. Then it began spread to Kuala Lumpur and other
states like Selangor.
Now, ladies and gentlemen, we are gathered here to celebrate our 130th anniversary of
the Boys' Brigade and also in remembrance of our Founder, Sir William Alexander Smith.
The Boys' Brigade has definitely came a long way, and in Malaysia. Let us look into what
we can find from Selangor state companies...
