Hi, I'm here today with Navelette Walker, the IQA here at Carlton Training. Hi Navelette,
thanks for coming along. Hi Philip, how are you?
Not bad, nice to see you. Likewise.
A couple of questions I want to ask you. First of all, first things first, what does IQA
stand for? Internal quality assurer.
That sounds quite a mouthful. Yeah, it is !
What's the role of an IQA? Basically I carry out checks on the learners'
work, what they call sampling. It's basically checking the learners' work to ensure that
the testing, and assessments that are carried out on them, and the delivery is basically
up to par. You don't actually test the candidates yourself,
though, do you? No, I don't I'm actually looking at how they're
actually being assessed by their tutors and assessors.
You're looking at the work of the team here up at Carlton Training?
I am, yes. What sort of things does that involve on a
day‑to‑day basis? What are the typical tasks you end up doing?
I carry out what they call "sampling," which is basically checking the results that have
been given, the feedback that's been given to learners from their tutors or their assessors.
I also observe the tutor actually doing testing, doing assessments. As well as that, I carry
out standardization meetings to keep up the assessors up to data on the progress of the
qualification. I also talk with the learners to make sure
that they're happy with the course that they're taking on board, and they're happy with their
actual progress, as well. You also deal with these awarding bodies,
don't you, that I hear about? These awarding organizations that we're connected with here
at Carlton? Yes, I basically attend various meetings with
the awarding bodies to keep myself updated so that I can come back and feed back to the
team members here at Carlton Training on the progress of the courses that we deliver and
in new courses that we may be thinking of delivering in the future. As well as that,
I work as an ambassador between Carlton Training and the awarding body. When they actually
come in here to the centre. This is when they do audits, and inspections,
and that sort of thing, is it? Yes, I'm always here, basically, to show them
the systems that we have in place, what quality practices we have in place, and that type
of things. Good, excellent. What do you like about your
role? That I'm always learning. I'm always learning
from our learners. I'm always learning from the staff members. As I said, I have been
in this environment for a number of years. But, even being there for a number of years
and having the amount of experience that I do, it doesn't stop you from learning new
ways of doing things and other ways of learning those things from learners. When I'm checking
candidates' work , I'm always learning new things from the assessors and the tutors during
these standardisation meetings that we have. Excellent. Thank you, Navelette.
You're welcome.
