Hey everybody, welcome to another edition of The Daily.
It's Monday, September 19th here with Jason Saghini.
I'm Nick Firchau. Lets look at some of the biggest storylines
in MLS over the weekend. Another big one.
That number 10 playoff spot in MLS, it actually changed hands 3 times over the weekend.
Right now it belongs to the New York Red Bulls. A big 1-0 win over FC Dallas.
They had some guys out there. They had some guys back.
How did they do it? I think the guys out for FC Dallas hurt the
most. That was Brek Shea and Marvin Chavez.
That really hurt their attack. Santos was on his own up there.
For now, New York, they got back Frank Ross in goal and also Luke Rogers up top.
Rogers scored the 1 goal that they needed to get the victory.
They did with without Henry and Marquez on the field and plenty of other guys that they
have been missing. It was their first win since July 6th.
This gets them that 10th spot in the playoffs for now.
Just their 2nd win on the road this season for the New York Red Bulls.
Lets talk a little bit about that team that had the 10th playoff spot.
That's DC United with a bi win over Chivas USA last weekend.
They went up to Seattle, unable to get a win at Sentry Link Field.
That brings us to the Marine Corps Leader of the Week.
That's Alvaro Fernandez of the Seattle Sounders. Alvaro Fernandez put on quite an impressive
performance up there for the Sounders. He was running off the ball.
He was finding the right spaces. He scored 2 goals on the night to help lead
them to that 3-0 victory. If you look at his performance, he is really
helping them keep pace with the LA Galaxy in the western conference.
Obviously the Galaxy one of the hottest teams all year in MLS.
Check back every monday for the rest of the month as we continue celebrating Latino values
and the Marines that have them. For the Seattle Sounders, another big storyline
out of this one and that's Mauro Rosales. He had 2 assists in for the Sounders, but
a late injury from Daniel Ward. We're going to find out the extent of the
injury on monday, but They did talk about the Galaxy in that Shield race.
Mauro Rosales, his health, how important is it going to be so the Sounders can keep pace.
Mauro Rosales has been the spark in the Seattle attack all season since Steve Zakwani went
down with an injury. He's been huge for them.
It would be a great blow. They do have depth in the midfield, but nobody
that really pulls the strings like Rosales does.
He puts everyone else in good positions in the attack.
I think this would be a huge loss for them if this is a serious injury.
The Galaxy and the Sounders on top of the Western Conference.
One other team chasing them from behind, Reals Salt Lake.
A big 1-0 win over Sporting Kansas City. That bumps them up from 4th to 3rd over FC
Dallas. Can RSL keep pace with these guys?
The thing about Reals Salt Lake is that they still have 2 games in hand on Seattle, so
they could end up being the 2nd seat in the Western Conference if they were to keep winning
these games. It was a big victory for them in front of
a home crowd, keeping Kansas City off the board which isn't a small task.
They are one of the highest scoring teams in the league.
Great performance from Jason Chrisman's group. From a Sporting Kansas City standpoint, a
lost opportunity to gain some traction in the eastern conference.
They had the chance to overtake the Columbus Crew at the top of the east, but they couldn't
do it. Columbus, as it stands now, one point ahead
of Sporting Kansas City despite losing to the Philadelphia Union 1-0 down in PPO Park.
If you're the Union, you're happy. You're within 2 points of the top spot.
For Philadelphia, they haven't won in 8 games. To get this victory over the leaders in the
east, it really changes everything. Now they're not struggling anymore.
Now they're back in it only 2 points behind the team in first place.
For Columbus, they've now lost the last 3 of their 4 games.
Not what you want to see when you're leading the conference.
You want to be able to stretch your lead, especially when Kansas City fails to get results.
They haven't done it. They are tighter up top in the eastern conference.
It's anyones game when it comes to 1st through 4th place.
Whenever you talk about the Philadelphia Union, you have to talk about that talented youth
that they have. We actually got to see Zack Pfeffer start,
the 18 year old midfielder. We also saw Roger Torres with the assist to
Sebastian LeToux. That brings us to our 24 under 24 exclusive
series here on MLSsoccer.com You're going to find out number 5 on Monday,
but we saw a lot of talented players including Freddy Adu of the Philadelphia Union last
week. Who stuck out for you?
Freddy Adu not making the top 5 maybe sticks out.
I think he's a player that a lot of people are high on.
The other guy that I like is Nagby. He is a guy who I think is going to be the
center-piece of the Portland Attack. Remember how happy John Spencer was when Nagby
fell to him in the draft. Nagby is actually going to join us on the
latest edition of ExtraTime Radio, which comes out on Monday.
