In order to treat colitis, you actually have to understand what's causing the colitis.
Remember, colitis is inflammation of the colon and it's basically a general term for it.
So, if you've got colitis due to ulcerative colitis or Crohn's colitis, then you need
anti-inflammatory medication, such as Mesalamine or immune modulators like Humera or Remicade
or 6 MP, in order to boost your own body's healing to help manage the disease.
If you have ischemic colitis or infectious colitis, sometimes antibiotics and rehydration
helps manage the inflammation that way. So if the colitis is due to an infectious colitis,
something called C. difficile or Clostridium difficile, this is a type of colitis that
can happen if you've been treated with antibiotics, because the antibiotics can kill off the good,
natural bacteria of the colon that protects our colon. Then you get something called C.
difficile colitis and you can develop pseudomembranous colitis, which is basically getting a film
of inflammatory cells.
And the way to treat that type of colitis is with another antibiotic which helps to
manage C. difficile colitis. If there's another type of infection caused by other bacteria,
then there are other antibiotics that are needed to help treat that type of colitis
as well.
