2010 Literacy Prizes conferred by UNESCO. With a theme this year of women’s empowerment,
the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) announced
the six 2010 recipients of the award given for excellence and innovation in improving
literacy. Among those honored were the Non-Formal Education Center in Nepal for its successful
national campaign, and the Governorate of Ismailia in Egypt for its Females for Families
program that helped train village girls to become community development facilitators.
Cape Verde’s General Directorate of Adult Training was also recognized for reducing
national illiteracy from 60% to 20% by 2005, while the State Institute for Teacher Training
and School Development in Germany was honored for its literacy project to benefit immigrant
families. Malawi’s Coalition of Women Farmers was awarded for a project that helped women
farmers achieve economic independence, while Colombia’s North Catholic University Foundation
was recognized for a virtual literacy program to aid e-learning.
