I: After the break, once again welcome to 'Hello Sakhi'. Our topic for today is 'How
self-confidence can be our path to success' and for this we have Sameer
Surve with us. Before the break, Bharat Waval had asked
three questions.
Sameer: Yes, his first question was very general and it's difficult to answer as to
how to increase your self-confidence. Self-confidence is related to a specific
activity, this is what I believe in.
Example, if you tell me to speak in front of people, I can do it but if you tell me to
do trekking or to climb down a hill, then I'll be scared. I wouldn't have the
self-confidence to do that. Hence, self-confidence is always connected with
something but if you want a definition of self-confidence, then I'd say that not
fearing something is not self-confidence but if any problem arises then even if I
don't know the answer, I'll find out an answer anyhow - this belief is what is
self-confidence.
For increasing self-confidence, Knowledge is very important. The field in
which you want to increase your self-confidence, increase your knowledge
in that field as much as possible. Swami Vivekananda has said that Knowledge is
Power. Hence, increase your knowledge and keep on doing whatever you fear.
When you do something that you fear, you feel a knot in your stomach, your
mouth becomes dry but if you keep doing something you fear inspite of all this,
slowly your fear decreases and your self-confidence in that area increases.
This, I feel, is the answer to the first question. His 2nd question was, "Once
we have done something, should we expect favourable results or not?"
In the Geeta, it is said that you shouldn't worry about the results.
The answer is that whether you expect results or not, the fact is that the results
are not in your hand. No gardener can say that I have done so much hard work and
now I should get so many mangoes.
Result is never in our hands. Sachin Tendulkar can only play good cricket but
whether India wins the match or not is not in his hands. It is dependent on many
factors. Hence, the less we think about the results, the better.
However, we should keep on learning from all our experiences. When we get a
desired result, we should look back and think as to how we got this result, what
exactly did we do to get it and if we don't get the desired result, we should think
and see why we were unsuccessful. What were the mistakes we made due to which
we didn't get the desired result.
So, whatever results you get, keep learning and keep doing your work.
Success and failure keep coming and going.
I: There was one more question: "How to develop a positive attitude?"
Sameer: To develop a positive attitude there are two things. The first is
Knowledge. The more knowledge we have, the more accurate our thinking is.
The second very important factor is your environment. If there are
negative-thinking people around us, then definitely the environment becomes
negative and this affects us.
Keep good company. Have nice friends. And if this is not possible, then read a lot.
My friends have always been good books. Hence, read a lot and reading is
something you can do anywhere, in the train, while travelling etc. My advice is
that wherever you go take a book with you. If somebody keeps you waiting, if
you have to stand in a line, while travelling, take out your book and read.
Due to this, your thoughts will remain positive and your positive attitude will
keep on developing.
Also we get a lot of references from reading about how other people faced
their problems, how successful people had overcome difficult situations in their
lives etc.
Due to this, our decision-making skills also improve.
