Hi, I'm Katy Thurber from Ocean Springs, Mississippi, and I'm a journalism major.
We went all over Spain and Portugal for two weeks
researching stories, going to restaurants, and taking tours to produce a travel magazine.
We went to the Mercado de San Miguel
in Madrid which was a huge a bustling place
Just so many food stands, so many vendors, so many people all at once
It was a place for people went to hang out after work too
so we got to hang out with some of the locals.
We went to the bar that Hemingway hung out at
in Barcelona, so we got to see some the nightlife.
One of my favorite things we did is taking cooking class in Barcelona
and I really learned a lot about the Catalan culture, I learned how to make
some of their signature dishes and how to make
paella and crema Catalan, and which is like Spanish version
of creme brulee. I got to take
a bike ride along the beach in Barcelona, which is beautiful, we got to go to an opera
in Madrid I'm we saw Marina, which was beautiful.
I love travel journalism because you really get to experience a new culture
and you're immersed in that you get to learn so much about it and then you get to tell
everybody about it. I have these great experiences that I can share with everybody I know.
I thought about travel writing for a long time but I never really knew if I
wanted to do it
and this is something where I went and I researched and I wrote the stories and
its a student-run magazine,
so I got to see first-hand if I want to do it and it is something that I want to do.
I kinda figured out my future career
by going on this trip because it's something that I loved and I would love
to do it every single day of my life
