I am with P. Allen Smith and guess what, I am standing right smack in his kitchen!
Your home is so incredibly beautiful.
Thank you Shawna, you're so sweet.
Thank you for having me here, its been really wonderful.
One of the most fascinating things about your property is your vegetables.
I watched my grandparents grow vegetables,
and I think it's a great way to get kids involved in vegetable gardening today.
My brother and I, three years ago we cleared
We thought well, we'll clear a half acre. Then it went to two and a half acres, then three acres,
and then we planted two acres of vegetables.
and so from there on we have planted two acres of vegetables and we're even considering a river farm
which we own down on the river,
and doing that around sweet potatoes and things like that, so i'm totally out of control when it comes to vegetables.
That's good!
It's about the food, but it's also about community, and sharing.
One of the wonderful things that have been happening right now is all my Facebook followers
have been following every movement that we have been making the last couple days.
Oh heavens!
It's very cool!
And they've been sending them questions, and one of my followers, Becky
she wants to know what you feel are the top three garden trends this season
that's really big that she wants to look into. What do you think?
Well I certainly think that food is so important.
People are really getting into growing their own food.
And you don't have to have a lot of space to grow a lot of food.
You can grow a tremendous amount of, herbs for example, in containers.
There are a lot of vegetables that are suited to container gardening.
I grow a lot of salad greens in the spring, in containers.
Also, throughout the growing season, usually when it warms up, we get some wonderful tomatoes.
We grew loads of Roma tomatoes for instance in containers last year
and then we planted sweet 100's, which is an indeterminate tomato.
I mean I thought it was going to take over the farm, and it was growing out of a container.
They're so sweet and delicious.
I love container gardening and I love the challenge of doing gardening on the vertical in container gardens,
putting trellises in containers, and trying to grow up in a container.
He has a beautiful painting, is it oil or watercolor that you work in?
Well the vegetable series that I did, which we laughingly call the big *** vegetable series.
I love that, they're huge!
So they just sort of fall off the page, it's like a big squash and the giant tomato that ate New Jersey.
They're huge and there are these big eggplants and things like that.
This is some of the coolest art ever! It's in its infancy, it's just starting!
And this is what Allen was talking about.
These paintings are in his home and they're also being donated to important causes.
He's trying to make a difference.
Lastly, I need to ask you what does the P. stand for in P. Allen Smith?
That's what everyone has been asking! They want the story.
Well my grandmother always said that the P. stood for potential, but the P. stands for Paul.
Wonderful! Well thank you so much for taking a few moments, and thank you so much for having me here on your property.
I'm thrilled you could come out to the farm. It's been great fun and I'm so glad you could see the house
and we could spend some time here in the kitchen, which is really the heart of the house.
And, you said your favorite room.
It is indeed.
Wonderful! Well thank you very much, and it's Shawna Coronado signing out.
