Hello!
Now I'm going to talk about St Vincent's.
After the christmas break, we had our 1st game of 2011
last saturday vs Tallaght Athletic who we played last Nov/Oct
We beat them 1-0, and it was now their turn to come to our ground
There was some doubts about the pitch because of the rain
that had fallen in the week before the game.
But on the day it was fine and the match was on.
Before kick-off, the two captains from each team contested the coin toss
Our usual captain, Paul O'Callaghan was unavailable
as was our vice captain Jamie Wilson.
So Geoff Foy decided Stuart Foy would be captain for the day
We won the toss so we decided to play with the wind in the 1st half.
We looked good but disaster struck early!
In the first 2 mins, Tallaght Athletic took a shot
which should have been a standard save
but our keeper jumped a wee bit too early and
at the same time the wind meant the ball was travelling slower than it would do
the keeper got his hand to the ball
but he didn't have enough strength to push it over the bar
and the ball ended up in the back of the net
much to our disappointment!
But we didn't let our heads drop, there was still 88 minutes left!
We continued to play well, we looked the fitter side
After some good passing, our left winger John O'Sullivan was fouled in the box.
and the referee pointed to the penalty spot.
Jason Maguire placed the ball on the spot and slotted it in to make it 1-1.
This was good for St Vincent's because Tallaght looked less confident.
We keep passing the ball and kept plugging away
when Jason, who was playing very well, cut in from his position on the right wing
and somehow managed to score from a very tight angle to make it 2-1!
It remained that score until half time
We discussed playing against the wind in the 2nd half,
we'd have to work hard with 3 points in mind
because we wanted to get our first home win of the season!
In the 2nd half Tallaght began to attack
but we defended well and we soon got our 3rd goal by Jason again!
He did very very well for the goal
The goal came about when O'Sullivan was fouled on the left wing.
As the freekick was being prepared, the defence and strikers were jostling for position
Jason went on a clever run and rose highest to head on the ball into far side of the goal
It was a beautiful goal and we were now 3-1 up.
Tallaght Athletic seemed a bit agigated and began to put up a fightback
We gave away a dangerous freekick near our box
After it was sent in, a goalmouth scramble ensued
and the ball fell nicely for one of Tallaght's players who blasted it into the top corner to make it 3-2!
The reaction of our players was that we would not let them equalise to make it 3-3!
As the game went on, players like myself and Keenan Byrne were taken off in favour of fresh legs
to give the team more resilence
With about 6/7 minutes left, we scored again thanks to our left winger from Cork- John O'Sullivan.
Oh it was really a beautiful goal, it was the best goal out of the 4 we scored.
It involved a good bit of passing before a cross was sent in
And some clever movement from our forward, Ray Watson, dragged the defence out of the way
and the ball met the path of John O'Sullivan's run and he got onto the end of it
to send the ball into the bottom corner which the keeper couldn't do anything about.
With the score at 4-2, Tallaght appeared very despondant with only 7 minutes left.
It was too much for them to stage a comeback in that time.
So it remained 4-2 until the final whistle.
The players were greatly relieved to have earned ourselves our first home win of the season.
After the match Geoff Foy said there were two players in contention for the Man of the Match award,
Our keeper Steven Gannon, even though he made a mistake in the 2nd min of the game,
he played very well from that point onwards, but the final vote went to John O'Sullivan
who played very well and he scored his first ever goal for St Vincents.
Afterwards, Geoff totally forgot about Jason Maguire who scored a hatrick so he amended his decision
so the award was presented to both John and Jason!
Hope you keep following St Vincent's for our next game vs HotPress in the cup this saturday,
We want to win to go through the next round!
See ya!
