Today on BRStv we have our 11th episode in the Neptune Apex series, how to calibrate
your temp probe
Hi I'm Ryan, host of BRStv where each week we hit on a new topic related to reefing.
This week we are going to calibrate your temp probe on the Neptune Apex. Temperature is
one of those goofy things where people tend to trust it because it is displayed on a digital
read out, the thing is, they are almost always off to some degree. In fact, if you look at
the specs most are plus or minus two degrees or even worse.
The guys at Neptune are going to kill me for showing this, but on my office tank I have
a temp probe in the main Apex which reads 77.9 and one on the PM2 salinity module which
reads 76.3. Since both are in the same area of the sump one or both of these obviously
needs to be calibrated.
You really have two choices for this, either spend some money to get a highly accurate
option or use a variety of sources and average them. In this case we did both - I picked
up a NIST validated thermometer with an accuracy of 0.4 degrees and two other options that
were listed as one degree. The NIST validated option says my tank is 75.6 and the other
two show 74.7 and 75.2 with an average of 75.16.
Knee jerk here might be to be upset with why the Apex is readying higher than that but
honesty that's why the calibration option exists, so you can get highly accurate readings
you trust. So let's calibrate this thing.
Hit the main menu button, set up and temp set up. temp calibrate and then select the
probe that you are calibrating, which is temp, and I am going to calibrate mine to the average
of the three sources I had which was rounded up to 75.2 in my case I will come back and
to the exact same thing again with the tempx5 on my PM2 as well.
That's all there is to it now I know my tank temp is accurate and something I can re-calibrate
from time to time the same way I would my pH , ORP or Salinity Probe. If you have any
questions on this or advice for other reefers check out the comments area down below. If
this is your first time with us subscribe because we do this every week! See ya next
week with another episode of BRStv.
