Learning a new language can be difficult, especially when it comes to vocabulary.
There's just so many words to remember. Where do you start?
What's more, everybody has their own knowledge, interests and experiences that can really
affect how they learn. It's common to understand that learning about a subject like history
might be easy for some people, but more difficult for others. For those people, chemistry might
come easier.
So why do we recognize that everyone learns differently when learning other subjects,
but when it comes to foreign languages, everyone's taught the same things, in the same order?
Well, not anymore!
That's why we made Goi. Goi takes advantage of the fact that everyone has different knowledge,
different interests, and different experiences that impact how quickly they learn different
pieces of a language. Then, rather than letting that be an obstacle, Goi actually uses that
to its advantage so it can custom-tailor what it teaches to each person, individually.
Learning foreign language vocabulary is like a big, giant contextual puzzle, full of words.
Goi makes sense of the vast sea of words for you, and intelligently chooses the right words
for you to learn next based on their relationships to each other, and how well you know the context
surrounding them.
So how does Goi decide which words to teach you? Well, there are a few factors, but luckily,
Goi is smart! First, Goi pays attention to what words you know well. Then, based on those
words, Goi looks for what will be easiest and more practical for you to learn next.
For example, Joel is studying Japanese, and he loves to surf. Naturally, he's picked up
the word "water" really quickly, because he's out in the ocean all the time catching sweet
waves. Surfs up, dude!
Goi knows this, and also knows that the word "wet" is closely related to the word "water",
so it might teach that to him next. Similarly, Goi knows that the word "suspicious" isn't
very closely related at all, so it wouldn't teach that. For now, Joel's going to be learning
words that are closely related to "water" like "wet", "beach", "sand", "sun", and "fun"!
The best part? When Joel wants to study, he doesn't have to spend hours tediously making
flash cads anymore. Goi does everything for him. Plus, if he starts to forget a word,
Goi will adjust what it teaches, all while keeping the multitude of contextual word relationships
in mind.
This is just a quick look at how Goi works, and how it's changing the way we learn vocabulary,
but you've really got to experience it for yourself.
