A historic milestone for gay couples in England and Wales, as many tied the knot just after
midnight on Saturday.
I, David, take you, Peter, to be my lawful wedded husband.
I am now very happy to announce that you are now legally... (cheers)
Up and down the country, same sex couples were celebrating at ceremonies. Ceremonies
which represent the end of years of campaigning for the same rights as straight couples.
So fantastic to be here tonight to celebrate these first same-sex marriages.
Among those were David Cabreza and Peter McGraith, who, at one minute past midnight exchanged
vows in north London.
I feel very privileged and honoured and proud to be able to get married in this country.
I think it's fantastic and very optimistic about the future. It's just one of many, many
series of progressions we have made over the last couple of decades, and I think it's just
a phenomenal, fantastic thing, and I'm so honoured to be part of it.
While gay couples have been allowed to enter into civil partnerships since 2005, it was
only last July that same-sex marriages were legalised, with Campaigners hailing the change
in the law as Britain's leap "into the 21st century".
At last Britain has leapt into the 21st century, to acknowledge that marriage is for everyone
who loves each other.
And while the number of countries legalising gay marriage has grown since the Netherlands
made the first move in 2000, only 17 currently allow gay couples to marry.
Congratulations to you both!
