He’s a Nazi killing, star-spangled, man with a plan who has featured in 2,935 different
comic series and 10 films... This is Captain America in numbers.
He debuted in his own comic in December 1940. The now iconic cover featured an image of
the patriotic superhero punching Adolf Hitler in the face. In 2011, a copy of the issue
sold for a whopping $3,430,000.
Captain America was born in 1920, so, chronologically, he is around 95 years old. However, since
the Super-Soldier Serum delayed his biological aging, physically Steve Rogers is a man in
his early-to-mid 30’s.
He can bench press 545kg and run over 1.5km in 73 seconds.
His weapon of choice is his shield, a concave disk 76cm in diameter and 5.4 kg in weight.
According to website Movieclips, this Vibranium shield would cost a massive $54,000,000 in
real life.
Captain America has fought against 73 enemies since the start of the Marvel Cinematic Universe,
for example Red Skull, The Winter Soldier and Baron Zemo.
Chris Evans’ superhero suit worn during the final battle scene with the Red Skull
in the 2011 Captain America film sold at auction for $233,700 to an anonymous bidder.
Steve Rogers has also managed to find time for love over the years, he has had relationships
with 5 women including Peggy Carter and her niece, Sharon Carter.
A film titled ‘Captain America’ was released in summer 1990, to coincide with the 50th
anniversary of Captain America. The film was universally panned and received an abysmal
9% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Captain America almost had his own musical, with production announced in 1985. It had
a $4 million dollar budget, but perhaps thankfully, it never made it to the stage.
The First Avenger - however - earned over $370 million worldwide, making the 2011 film
the third highest grossing movie set in WW2.
When Chris Evans was initially awarded the role, he turned it down 3 times, as he had
reservations about committing to a period of 7-8+ years.
So keep your eyes peeled for Captain America: Civil War, coming to cinemas on May 6th 2016.
But for now, we hope you learnt something new about the first avenger, thanks for watching!
