Hello. Today I'm going to be your tour guide on a brief introduction to Newton Park Library.
I'm going to show you how to find books, how to borrow them, and introduce you to some of our specialist collections.
However I won't be demonstrating the Library's expanding collection of online resources, including e-books and e-journals.
These will be covered in further teaching sessions.
OK, it's 4.10pm. I'm standing on the lawn outside Main House.
Ahead of us is Newton Park Library.
So fasten your seat-belts, because you're going on the ride of your lives.
Both the Library foyer and the IT Rooms upstairs are open 24/7 in term-time.
So you can work whenever you want and access our Group Study facility.
Support and advice is available from the librarians at our Information Desk.
We can help you research an essay question, find the right books or e-journal articles, or source information from other UK libraries.
Ok, so you're in the Library, you've got your essay question, now how do you actually go about finding things...?
The library catalogue is available on our website, so you can check our stock from home.
Notice how I'm typing "AND" between my search words.
"AND" tells the catalogue to look for those search words in any order, anywhere, in each database entry.
Therefore you should get more search results.
Once you've found an item that you want to look at, click on "Details".
The catalogue tells you where the books is, how long you can borrow it for, and you now need to note down this number.
You can also renew your books online by using the Self Service function.
And you can reserve books that other people have borrowed by using the Place Hold function.
We'll send an email to your Bath Spa email address when the book is ready for you to collect.
To do either of these things [Renew or Place Hold]
your Library card number is your student number and your PIN is your birthday written as six digits.
OK, so I've found a book that I want to read, now let's go and find it.
I'm going to have to whisper from here on in, because the main library stock is a quiet zone.
Over here on our right is the reshelving area.
If you can't find a book on the shelves, it's probably here - waiting to be put back.
Now the books in the main area of the Library are all organised in a system of numbers
which goes from zero [over there] to one thousand [over on the right hand side].
My book is 791, so it's going to be a bit more over to the right. Let's go and have a look for it..down the steps...
What's this...378. OK, so it's further on towards the right...
600...
791... That's what we're looking for!! It's got to be down this row somewhere.
You'll notice that some of the library books are, quite literally, covered in red tape.
Red tape means that you can borrow a book for one week at a time.
Blue tape means that you can only look at a book in the Library.
OK, we're getting close to our book now... We're looking for 791.430233.
And there it is. That's the one that I picked on the catalogue.
Now I'm going to borrow my book using the self-issue machines in the Library foyer.
These work a bit like the self-checkout machines in the supermarket,
and here my colleague Celia is going to give you a masterclass in how to use them.
Press the touch-screen to begin.
Now today we're going to be using a staff card, but in real-life this would be your student SU card.
Notice the beautifully smooth forward motion that Celia used there. Absolutely outstanding!
Now she's using the barcode inside the book [NOT the barcode on the back cover].
Again, smoothly pushing the barcode underneath the laser scanner.
And Celia can now press "Print Receipt" to get a receipt that tells her when the book is due back. Thanks Celia!
Now let's rewind a bit here.
And suppose you wanted to search for a DVD instead of a book.
This leads to one of the most profound questions that we face in our lives...
Where is the DVD Room?
So to try and resolve this question I've got an iPad, a book trolley,
and together they make "Trolley-Cam".
[music]
For this video, the DVD Room is the end of the line.
But for you I hope this video is the beginning of a rewarding experience at Bath Spa Library.
See you soon.
