My main message to young people is sort of summed up by my opinion pieces. My public
affairs section gathered about 22 of the better ones that had been published in the independent
media and published them in a book that we distribute to schools and youth groups. And
my message, my sort of core message to young people, is actually contained in the title
of that book, which is “Where you come from matters less than where you’re going.”
And my message to people there is that where you come from is where you come from. It sort
of shapes some of who you are, but who you become is up to you. And you can let where
you come from completely shackle you and inhibit your growth, or you can decide for yourself
what and who you want to be. You don’t let other people define you. That’s my message
to any young people. It’s my message to my children, it’s my message to myself – that
I am ultimately responsible for what I become.
