DERBY AND IT IS A SOLAR POWERED
REMOTE CONTROL CAR DEMOLITION
DERBY.
EVER SINCE I WAS A YOUNG KID, I
GREW UP INSTALLING SOLAR
ELECTRIC AT SMALL TOWN COUNTY
FARES WITH MY FATHER AND SO WE
ALWAYS PUT IN TEMPORARY ELECTRIC
AND A COUPLE YEARS AGO, I WENT
BACK TO HELP HIM AND HE BUILT
THIS SOLAR POWERED GOLF CART,
THAT WAS MY WORK VEHICLE, IT WAS
ONE LARGE SOLAR PANEL WHERE IT
POWERED THE GOLF COURT.
IT NEVER NEEDED ANY MAINTENANCE.
MY FAVORITE PART OF THE FAIR IS
WATCHING THE DEMOLITION DERBY
AND I LIKE THAT PEOPLE SPEND ALL
THIS TIME AND IT BECOMES A SUPER
CREATIVE ACT TO BUILD■ç SOMETHIG
THAT YOU'RE JUST GOING TO
DESTROY IN THIS LIKE AMAZING
SUPER FAST SPECTACLE.
YOU COULD ALSO THINK ABOUT A
DEMOLITION DERBY AS BEING
ECOLOGYICALLY RIDICULOUS AND
IT'S SORT OF EXCESSIVE.
WE HAVE ALL THE OLDER CARS THAT
WOULDN'T PASS EMISSIONS THAT
SMASH INTO EACH OTHER AND
EVERYTHING GOES INTO THE GROUND.
MAYBE ON LIKE A MENTAL LEVEL,
YOU THINK IT'S KIND OF STUPID,
BUT ON A GUTTURAL LEVEL AND
OVERALL, IT'S LIKE, WELL,
THEY'RE AMAZE.
THE PROJECT STARTED BASICALLY AS
A SERIES OF LONG SKETCHES AND
IDEAS AND WHAT ACTUALLY MADE IT
POSSIBLE TO BRING IT INTO
FRUITION WAS WINNING THE GREATER
MILWAUKEE FOUNDATION'S MARY
KNOLL FELLOWSHIP.
ALL THE ARTISTS ARE IT INVITED
TO HAVE EXHIBITION A YEAR LATER
WHERE WE ARE NOW AND THAT'S WHAT
GOT THE BALL ROLLING REALLY.■ç
THE CARS ARE HOBBY GRADE REMOTE
CONTROLLED CARS, SO I WAS
PLEASANTLY SURPRISED THAT
THEY'RE SUPER FAST AND I HAD NO
IDEA ABOUT REMOTE CONTROLLED
CARS BEFORE DOING THIS.
THE BODIES OF REMOTE CONTROLLED
CARS ARE SUPER DURABLE, SO I
REALIZED THAT I DON'T WANT THAT.
AND SO I DECIDED TO BUILD ALL
THE BODIES OUT OF LUON WHICH IS
A CHEAP WOOD.
ALL THE CARS CAN BE CHARGED ON A
SOLAR POWERED STATION THAT IS
100% RENEWABLE.
IT TAKES THE CARS FIVE TO SIX
HOURS TO CHARGE.
THE SOLAR POWERED STATION IS
MUCH MORE OVERKILL THAN WE NEED,
SO IT DOESN'T TAKE THAT MUCH
POWER TO CHARGE THE CARS, BUT WE
WANTED TO MAKE SOMETHING THAT
WOULD BE ROBUST ENOUGH TO ALSO
BE USED LIKE SAY, AT LIKE A
LOCAL FARMERS MARKET.
YOU COULD RUN ALL YOUR POWER OFF
THAT■ç OR SOME SORT OF OUTDOOR
FESTIVAL.

GUITARS, EVEN ONE PLAYED BY JIMI
HENDRIX.

AND THE AMERICAN WEST, THAT'S
WHAT OUR MISSION IS.
BUT WE ALSO WANTED TO LOOK AT
WHAT WAS UNIQUE ABOUT
INSTRUMENTS AND MUSIC IN THE
WEST.
NOT ONLY WHAT WAS BROUGHT TO THE
WEST, BUT WHAT WAS CREATED IN■
THE WEST THAT INFLUENCED THE
REST OF THE WORLD.
AND A BIG PART OF THAT IS THE
HISTORY OF HOW PEOPLE DEVELOPED
NEW INSTRUMENTS THAT WERE
LOUDER, BASICALLY.
AND THAT STORY OF AMPLIFYING THE
GUITAR, ALMOST ENTIRELY IS TO
THE CREDIT OF PEOPLE IN THE
AMERICAN WEST.
MUSICAL FORMS THAT ORIGINATED IN
SEATTLE, OR THE BEACHES OF
CALIFORNIA, OR IN THE STUDIOS
OF.
OF LOS ANGELES, OR POPULAR FORMS
OF MUSIC, YOU KNOW, BLUES IN

THE EXPERIENCE MUSIC PROJECT IN

CENTER IN LOS ANGELES, THE
NATIONAL MUSIC MUSEUM IN SOUTH
DAKOTA.
WE NORMALLY WORK WITH
COLLEAGUES, STUDYING THE THINGS
THEY HAVE AND ARRANGING TO MAKE
LOANS.
BEING ABLE TO CONTACT COLLECTORS
AND PLAYERS IS NOT ALWAYS EASY.

THAT WAS RECORDED IN NOBLESVILLE
AT THE DEER CREEK, SO THERE'S A
REAL PIECE OF INDIANA THERE.
