The path initiated about five years ago
that ENI embarked on with the aim of valorising the past
and providing scholars and researchers with materials containing information,
has become reality.
On 10th May the President Roberto Poli
inaugurated the historical archive in Pomezia,
in the Province of Rome.
Participating at the event were:
Salvatore Italia, Director of the department of Archival and Library Heritage
Pier Giorgio Ceccarelli, ENI' s director of company affairs,
to whom the historical archive reports,
representatives of the Archival Superintendence agencies of Italy
and pioneers and veterans of ENI,
including some of Mattei's collaborators.
ENI's historical archive is one of the most important in Italy,
thanks to which it is now possible to look back
over all the stages of the company's history
told through over five kilometres of documents
tens of thousands of photographs,
and over 1,500 films from ENI cinema which represent
a precious cross-section of the last fifty years
of the country's economic history.
ENI's album starts with these old family photos,
dedicated to AGIP, "Azienda Generale Italiana Petroli"
founded in 1926.
The watchword was: find oil.
In this way scholars and researchers have the possibility
to consult the documentation and follow the development of ENI
from its founding in February 1953
and learn about a part of the world history of oil and natural gas.
The materials preserved make it possible to study
the main aspects of the country's energy history.
The historical archive can be a reference point
for reflection about the evolution of the culture of this Italian oil company,
and in some ways the county's industrial development too.
The archive holds about 45 thousand files of documents,
the heritage kept here starts in the early 1900s
when the first nucleus of the Italian oil industry was formed.
Amongst the orderly and catalogued
papers, there are also those produced by "Ente Nazionale Idrocarburi",
now ENI S.p.A.,
those of the first companies operating
in the Italian oil and gas sectors
right from the early years of the last century.
