Hello, I'm Peter Strike. I'm Vice Chancellor here at the University of Cumbria and it's
my great pleasure to welcome you here at the start of this new academic year.
We've worked with the Students' Union to create the Students' Charter, which will be part
of the pack which you'll receive, which will set out the responsibilities which we expect
of you, and which you, quite rightly, will expect of us.
The Student Charter is a document that the University of Cumbria and the Students' Union
have both worked on. It's a document that covers what you should expect at the university,
from personal tutors, to what services you receive at the library and what you should
expect in your lectures. It's a really important document which I think all students should read.
We make sure you have access to everything you need to know about your studies through
your student handbook. If you are having problems or need some help with your studies
there is help available. Our team of advisers are here to help if you have any specific needs,
or you can search the website. We are a dispersed university with a wide range of locations
and a diverse group of students. We aim to give all our students an equivalent experience
wherever they are studying.
As a member of the university, you have a wide range of physical and electronic resources
available to you. It's important to treat these with respect and abide by the laws governing their use.
Whilst studying here, it's also important to keep your contact details up to date
as the university will need to keep in touch with you.
To get the most out of your university experience, all staff and students need to attend timetabled
lectures, events and inductions. The University of Cumbria is a very small, but very friendly
place. Here at the university, we try to foster a collaboration between the students, between
those who we work with, and also those outside of the university community. Not just the
people we work with, but those outside of the university's four walls.
Our course programmes will allow you to develop practical skills as well as learn the theory,
and your course will give you the opportunity to test and develop these skills.
Many of our courses have placement opportunities where you'll be able to develop your skills in a real workplace.
The careers team, along with the academics will help you prepare for the
world of work as an employee or as an entrepreneur.
Staff and students are ambassadors of our university. Our positivity and professionalism
supports the development of the university.
Most students have a very positive experience at the university. If you do have any issues,
please let us know as soon as possible. There are formal and informal routes to resolve
issues and we can tell you how to access them. Don't wait til it's too late.
I'm quite certain that you'll enjoy your studies here at Cumbria. This is a great place to study,
it's a great place to achieve your academic aspirations and I'm certain that you'll enjoy your time with us.
I look forward to that time in the future when you, too,
cross that stage and receive the reward your academic studies will bring you.
