Ok so now we will look at the interior so we grab the magnifier. Well, I
think our concept of the teacher leader center, centers around what we I think conceive of
as a new generation teacher. Meaning a teacher who will be at the vanguard of all of the
innovations and advances in technology. The teacher leader center is a place, a location
where we can hold a variety of events. The students participate in these events which
then rolls into them earning a certificate. In earning our certificate they will also
gain in-depth knowledge in these three focus areas of technology, assessment and school
community, which will be very helpful to them as they enter into the interview situation.
It will help set them apart. One of the best parts about serving as director of the TLC
is I believe that it's responding to the current needs not only in the schools locally or on
a national basis, but I also think it's a wonderful response to the needs in the field
of education. So I'm excited about this assignment that I've received. I'm excited about this
center that we've built and we are beginning to implement these wonderful new programs.
The three components that we're focusing on for the teacher leader certificate are assessment,
technology and community. I'm actually responsible for coordinating our initiatives that have
to do with helping our students gain an awareness of community. So I'm really pleased that the
teacher leader certificate also includes forty hours of community service because I really
truly believe that for a number of our candidates being engaged in the community, whether it's
working with special services or with schools of school-aged children, they're going to
have a heightened level of awareness which will fuel their engagement and perhaps that
engagement is going to heighten their level of awareness. There is no doubt that University
of Iowa students working in the teacher leader center are going to be able to to take their
knowledge, take their skills and bring it, bring it into our classrooms. We'd be very
excited about having a graduate of the University of Iowa College of Education join us, or a
student teacher from the University of Iowa join us so that they can, they can help us
spread their knowledge and spread those skills throughout our school. And that's, that's
certainly very exciting. The teacher leader center is a unique configuration for delivering
some of the expertise that any future teacher needs to have as they anticipate going into
practice whether it's in their student teaching or through paid employment in their first
position. So I am hoping that we will expand the research that we do at the TLC so that
we know that the kinds of experiences that we're providing there are effective in that
end goal of producing better teachers for our schools. The teacher leader center, since
I've been coming, I've noticed a lot of things about it that have kind of sparked my interest.
I saw a group of educators or administrators from India and I got to see them interact
with some of the people around here and they're here to learn more about what the United States
does in the education system and that was really cool, I actually got to talk to one
of the gentleman that was a part of that group. The boot camps, and the meeting people that
go along with those boot camps, it's really starting to click in my mind what this is
doing for me. It's broadening me in the sense that my education and I'm being able to meet
people that I would't be able to meet normally. Here's the idea, that most of the stuff that
we're providing can only be provided because we have a space like this. We would not be
able to otherwise do it, and that is in fact the central notion behind the TLC, the value-added
enlarging dimension of the teacher education program. }
