This video shows how to do the cross.
It is one of the more difficult stitches to start,
so just take your time and be patient and you'll get it.
You will need four pieces of gimp,
two shorter pieces and two longer pieces that are each two times the length of
one of the shorter pieces.
Start by taking one of your long pieces of gimp,
bend it at its center and drop that over your index finger.
Then take the strand at the back and bring it around to make a second
loop. So, your back strand should be on the left side and your front strand
should be on the right side,
like mine is. Then, take your other long piece and bring it under both of
those loops, and pull it through until you reach its center.
Then take the left strand and bring it under and over the loops at the
top of your finger, and pull it through,
but not all the way.
You're going to want to leave this loop hanging off it at the end.
Take the right strand and go under and over the loops at the bottom of
your finger. Take one of your short pieces of gimp and bring it from the
bottom left of your finger across to the top right,
passing under these strands. Pull it through until it reaches its center.
On the left side go over this long strand and through the loop.
On the right side go over this long strand and through the loop.
Then take your other short piece of gimp and bring it from the top left
on your finger to the bottom right,
going under these strands, and pull it through until you reach its center.
Take the strand at the bottom and go over and under the original two loops
you made. Take the strand at the top and go over and under the original
two loops you made; and then slowly tighten it up and pull it off your
finger and tighten it. And you have officially started the cross.
To do the stitch, start by bringing across two of your long strands that are
the same color, and then bring the two short pieces that they cross over and
under. Then take your main long strands and bring them across going under and over
leaving loops at the end.
And take your remaining short pieces and go over and under the long pieces you
just brought across. And then tighten the strands.
And keep repeating this until you're ready to finish the lanyard.
If you get confused by the order,
take a look at one of your completed stitches,
and it will clarify which strands cross which strands.
So, going down the center and across the middle are the long strands.
My long strands are blue and green.
On the outside are the short strands.
Mine are red and yellow.
Yellow will only cross blue on every single stitch.
Red will only cross green on every single stitch.
So I start by taking my long blue strands and bringing them across.
Then I take my short yellow strands and I go over and under the long
blue strands. Then I take my long green strands and I go under and over
the long blue strands. And I finish by bringing my short red strands over and
under the long green strands.
When you are ready to finish the lanyard,
do a stitch the way you normally would.
Then tighten the strands, but don't tighten them all the way.
Then with each pair, so these two are a pair,
these two are a pair, these two are a pair,
and these two are a pair,
with each pair wrap the strand around its pair and bring it up through the
hole that the two strands make.
So, I'll start with this one,
I'll wrap it around, bring it up,
and I'll take its pair and do the same.
Then move on to the next one; move on to the next pair,
and finally to the last one.
And then slowly tightening each of those strands.
And cut off the excess strands,
and you have completed the cross.
